(Atchison, Kan.)- A furious fourth-quarter surge by Peru State fell just short Wednesday night, as Benedictine held on late for an 80-74 win in nonconference action.
The Bobcats trailed 48-41 after three quarters but erupted for 33 points in the final period to make it a one-possession game in the closing minute. Benedictine answered every push, however, using a late basket from Nicole Storck and steady free-throw shooting to keep Peru State at arm's length and close out the six-point victory.
Peru State spent most of the night playing from behind after Benedictine grabbed early momentum. The Ravens led 13-10 after the first quarter, capped by a buzzer-beating 2-pointer from Oen Deters, and extended the advantage with a 16-point second frame to take control at the half. Benedictine continued to lean on its inside scoring and pressure defense, finishing with a 40-30 edge in points in the paint and forcing 15 Bobcat turnovers that turned into 16 Raven points.
The Bobcats stayed within striking distance behind efficient perimeter shooting and balanced ball movement. Peru State shot 10-for-24 from beyond the arc and assisted on 19 of its 26 made field goals, showing patience and execution in the half court. The Bobcats also controlled the glass with a 41-33 rebounding advantage, including nine offensive boards that helped fuel the late comeback push.
