(Peru, Neb.)—The Peru State softball team dropped two against Benedictine on Wednesday, April 12. The Bobcats lost the first game 22-14 in six innings and the second game 10-0 in five innings.
Peru State is now 5-26 overall and 2-12 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play while Benedictine is 18-19 overall and 8-6 in Heart play.
Below is a breakdown of how the doubleheader went…
Game 1 L 22-14 (F/6) vs. Benedictine
In the first inning back-to-back singles scored the first run of the game for Benedictine. Then a sac-fly out the center field made the score 2-0 Ravens. A solo homerun out to center had Benedictine up 3-0 right away. The Ravens scored three runs on three hits and an error.
The Ravens poured it on in the second inning as they loaded the bases from two walks and a hit by pitch. They scored on a wild pitch to make the score 4-0. Then a bunted single scored the fifth run of the game.
A productive groundout made the score 6-0 Benedictine. Then a two RBI single had the Ravens up 8-0 in the second. Benedictine scored five runs on three hits and left one on.
Peru State started to claw its way back in the home half of the second inning. An RBI single from
Kylee Weiss (El Dorado, Kan.) scored the first run of the game for the Bobcats. Later in the inning the Bobcats had the bases loaded.
Then
Ellie Ohlde (Fairbury) hit a three RBI triple clearing the bases as the Bobcats were now down four runs 8-4.
Jami Mans (Fairbury) reached on an error bringing in a fifth Bobcat run. Peru State scored five runs on four hits an error and left one on base.
The scoring slowed slightly in the top of the third as the Ravens were only able to get two across from an RBI single and a productive ground out made the score 10-5 Benedictine. The Ravens scored two runs on four hits and left two on the bags.
Peru State threatened with the bases loaded in the home half of the third with one down but a strikeout and a flyout ended the threat. As the Bobcats did not get any runs across on two hits an error and left three on.
The scoring returned in the fourth inning, as an error and a single brought in the 11
th and 12
th runs for the Ravens. Then an executed double steal scored the 13
th run of the game for Benedictine.
An RBI triple down the right field line scored the 14
th run of the game for the Ravens. Benedictine would extend its lead to ten after an executed sacrifice bunt to make the score 15-5. Benedictine in the top of the fourth scored five runs on three hits two errors and left two on base.
Peru State fought back with eight runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ohlde hit a leadoff single and Mans hit a double to have runners in scoring position. A
Morgan Wilke (Bakersfield, Calif.) RBI single scored the sixth run of the game for the Bobcats.
Lanie Dreyer (Anniston, Ala.) hit a two RBI single bringing in the seventh and eighth runs in for Peru State.
Kaelyn Hamblen (Papillion) was hit by pitch and
Autumn Dixon (Stillwell, Kan.) drew a walk to load the bases.
Carlye Rothschild (Eros, La.) drew another walk to score the ninth run of the game for the Bobcats. Weiss then drew a walk to make the score 15-10.
Sophia Summers (Gardner, Kan.) reached on a fielder' choice and Dixon came home to score. Later in the inning, Mans hit a two RBI single to make the score 15-13. Peru State scored eight runs on six hits and left two on.
Benedictine scored five more runs in the top of the fifth. An RBI single made the score 16-13. Then the Ravens hit a sac fly to make the score 17-13. Later in the fifth inning a three-run home run to right center made the score 20-13 Ravens. Benedictine scored five runs on three hits and left one on base.
Peru State threatened in the bottom of the fifth but were unable to bring any runs across leaving two on base.
Benedictine had runners in scoring position after a leadoff walk and a double. Then a passed ball scored the 21
st run of the game for the Ravens. An RBI single made it 22-13 Benedictine. The Ravens scored two runs on two hits and left one on.
Ohlde drew a leadoff walk in the home half of the sixth, then Mans and Wilke singled to load the bases. Hamblen hit a two-out sac-fly to left to make the score 22-14. A fielder's choice ended the game via the mercy rule.
Dreyer took the loss pitching 3.2 innings giving up 12 runs on eight hits ten were earned.
Bailey Bitz (Ravenna) pitched 2.1 innings striking out a batter giving up ten runs on ten hits nine were earned.
Ohlde, Mans and Wilke led the way in hits with three apiece. Ohlde had a team-high three RBIs.
Game 2 L 10-0 (F/5) vs. Benedictine
In the second game the Ravens picked up right where they left off scoring four runs in the top of the first. The first on a singled bunt and then an error by the pitcher made the score 1-0. Then an RBI single made it 2-0 Benedictine. Then an RBI single out to center scored two more runs making it 4-0. Benedictine scored four runs on three hits and two errors.
Mans was able to get a two-out single in the home half of the first inning but a strikeout ended the first.
Benedictine tacked on another run in the top of the second via an RBI single to left to make the score 5-0 Ravens.
Andrea Page (Palisade) reached first on an error and advanced into scoring position on a passed ball but the Bobcats were unable to bring the runner home.
Benedictine hit a leadoff double in the third then later in the inning an RBI triple down the right field line scored the sixth run of the game for the Ravens. Benedictine scored one run on two hits and left one on base.
Summers hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the third inning. Later in the inning the Bobcats had runners on first and second but a strikeout ended the inning.
Benedictine hit a leadoff double and then a single to have runners on the corners. The Ravens scored their seventh and eighth runs of the game from an error and a passed ball. Benedictine scored two runs on two hits an error and left one on. Peru State went three up three down in the fourth.
The Ravens had runners in scoring position after a leadoff walk and then a single where the runner advanced to second. A productive groundout made the score 9-0 Ravens. Then an error scored the Ravens tenth run of the game. Benedictine scored two runs on one hit an error and left one on.
Peru State went down in order in the bottom of the fifth and the game ended 10-0 via the mercy rule.
Hailey Wessel (Malcolm) took the loss pitching three innings striking out two batters giving up seven runs on eight hits four were earned.
Cheyenne Leach (Wymore) pitched two innings striking out two batters giving up three runs on two hits each run was earned.
Mans and Summers each recorded a hit.
Peru State hits the upper Iowa swing this weekend with a doubleheader at Mount Mercy on Saturday, April 15, and at Clarke Sunday, April 16. First pitch both days is set for 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
