(Peru, Neb.)—The Peru State baseball team lost both games of its doubleheader against Grand View on Tuesday, April 11, making up from an earlier postponed date. Peru State lost the first game 7-6 and the second game 10-3. The Bobcats are now 10-16 overall and 7-11 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play while the Vikings are now 22-8 overall and 10-7 in Heart play.
Below is a breakdown of how the doubleheader went…
Game 1 L 7-6 @ Grand View
Peru State got the scoring started in inning two of the first game after
Josue Francisco (San Cristobal, D.R.) hit an RBI single to make the score 1-0. The Bobcats scored one run on two hits and left two on in the second. Grand View threatened in the bottom of the second but was unable to bring any runner around to score.
The Bobcats kept the scoring up in the third inning starting with a leadoff single from
Will Reynolds (Bakersfield, Calif.). Then
Josue Vazquez (Salinas, P.R.) hit a two-run home run to make the score 3-0.
Yodelvy Garcia (Santiago, D.R.) hit a solo home run in the next at-bat as Peru State was leading 4-0. Peru State scored three runs on three hits in the third.
The Vikings fought back in the bottom of the fourth inning as they hit a three-run blast to make the score 4-3 after four innings of play. Peru State went three up three down in the top of the fifth.
Grand View took the lead in the home half of the fifth. They hit a two-run blast with two outs to make the score 5-4 Vikings. Grand View scored two runs on two hits and left one on base.
Peru State in the top of the sixth tied the game as Francisco hit his second RBI single of the game as it was now 5-5. The Bobcats scored one run on one hit and left two on base. Grand View hit a double in the bottom of the sixth but was unable to bring the runner around to score.
Back-to-back doubles from Wes Bradford
(Bakersfield, Calif.) and Vazquez gave the Bobcats a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh. Peru State scored one run on two hits and left two on in the seventh.
Grand View hit two RBI singles in the home half of the seventh inning to secure a walk-off 7-6 victory over Peru State.
Kevin Diaz (Dominican Republic) pitched 6.1 innings striking out five batters giving up seven earned runs on nine hits.
Hunter Abney (King City, Mo.) was the only other pitcher for the Bobcats in the game.
Vazquez led the way in hits and RBIs with two hits and three RBIs, respectively.
Game 2 L 10-3 @ Grand View
In the second game, Grand View got the scoring started right away with back-to-back home runs, the first a two-run blast and then a solo home run to make the score 3-0 early. Later in the first inning a single, hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bases for the Vikings.
Then a walk scored the Vikings fourth run of the game. Grand View scored four runs on three hits and left three on base. Vazquez hit a leadoff single in the top of the second then Garcia hit a single as the Bobcats had runners on first and second.
Micah McLeod (Franklin County, Fla.) reached on an error loading the bases. A productive groundout from
Garrett Pavletich (Bakersfield, Calif.) had Peru State get on the board with a run. The Bobcats scored one run on two hits an error and left one on base.
Grand View scored its fifth run of the game from a solo shot in the home half of the third inning as the Vikings now led 5-1. The Vikings poured it on in the fifth inning with four more runs. They got their sixth run of the game from an RBI double. Later in the inning a two RBI single with the bases loaded scored the Vikings seventh and eighth runs of the game.
An RBI single made the score 9-1 Vikings. Grand View scored four runs on three hits and left two on base. In the home half of the sixth inning Grand View scored its tenth run of the game from an RBI double making the score 10-1.
In the seventh inning Garcia hit a one out single and then McLeod hit a double to have two Bobcat runners in scoring position. Another productive groundout from Pavletich made the score 10-2 Vikings. McLeod later scored on a wild pitch but a strikeout ended the game as Peru State fell 10-3.
Sergio Benitez Clemente
(Carolina, P.R.) took the loss pitching an inning giving up four earned runs on three hits.
Luis Pacheco (Miami, Fla.) pitched three innings striking out two batters giving up one earned run on three hits. Abney pitched an inning giving up four earned runs on three hits.
Blake Denson (Broken Bow) pitched 0.2 innings striking out a batter giving up one earned run on two hits.
Brenton Pitt (Fremont) also tossed on the mound.
Garcia led the way in hits with two and Pavletich led the way in RBIs with two.
Peru State will return home for a four-game series vs. Mount Mercy on Saturday, April 15, and Sunday, April 16. First pitch is set for 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. both days.
