Peru State Baseball Sweeps Park Albury Earns 300th Win

(Peru, Neb.)—Peru State completed its four-game sweep of Park Monday afternoon with two victories. The back half of this series was played in Parkville, Mo., due to impending weather. Peru State beat Park 11-7, 4-3, 3-2 and 2-1. The Bobcats are now 8-8 overall and 5-3 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play while the Pirates are now 9-16 overall and 3-9 in Heart play.
 
Head Coach Wayne Albury also earned his 300th win at Peru State during the third game of the Park series. Below is a breakdown of how the four-game sweep went…
 
 
Game 1 W 11-7 vs. Park
 
 
The offensive fireworks were on display in game one between the Pirates and the Bobcats. Jacob Aberg (Lincoln) hit a leadoff double then Will Reynolds (Bakersfield, Calif.) hit an RBI double to make the score 1-0 Peru State. The Bobcats scored one run on two hits and left one on in the first.
 
Peru State in the home half of the second inning is where it did most of its damage. Randy Jimenez (Santiago De Los Caballeros) hit an RBI double for the Bobcats second run of the game.
 
Ivan Medina (Maracaibo, Venezuela) hit a two RBI single to make the score 4-0 in the second inning. Josue Vazquez (Salinas, P.R.) hit a two-out two RBI double bringing around two more Bobcat runners to score as Peru State was up 6-0.
 
The Bobcats scored five runs on five hits an error and left one on in the home half of the second. Park fought right back in the third inning scoring five runs of its own. An RBI double scored the Pirates first run of the game.
 
The Pirates then hit a two-run home run to make as Park cut the deficit in half trailing by three 6-3. Park hit a second two-run home run in the top of the third as the Bobcats leas trickled down to one 6-5.
 
Park scored five runs on five hits an error and left two on base. Peru State went three up three down in the bottom of the third. Neither team got much going offensively in the fourth.
 
The Pirates tied the game with a leadoff home run in the top of the fifth. Peru State matched with a lead off home run in the bottom of the fifth from Wes Bradford (Bakersfield, Calif.) as the Bobcats regained the lead 7-6.
 
Peru State would pull away in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Bobcats loaded the bases from a single by Garrett Pavletich (Bakersfield, Calif.), a single from Medina and a single from Reynolds.
 
Then Bradford hit a grand slam to make the score 11-6 in the bottom of the sixth. Peru State scored four runs on six hits and left two on base.
 
Park was able to score its seventh run of the game off a single but they were unable to tie the game as the Bobcats came away with the win.
 
Fernando Falero (Carolina, P.R.) came away with the win pitching 3.1 innings striking out three batters giving up one earned run on two hits. Wikander Gutierrez (Santo Domingo, D.R.) pitched 2.2 innings striking out a batter giving up five runs on six hits four were earned. Micah McLeod (Franklin County, Fla.) pitching one inning striking out one batter and giving up one earned run on two hits.
 
Aberg, Bradford, Reynolds, Medina and Vazquez all tied for the lead in hits with two each. Bradford came away with five RBIs.
 
 
Game 2 W 4-3 vs. Park
 
The second was less of a home run derby then the first but their was still plenty of magic in game two. Park threatened in the top of the first with the bases loaded after a walk, and two hit by pitches but the Bobcats got out the half inning unscathed.
 
Peru State then threatened in the home of the first inning after Reynolds singled and Bradford drew a walk. Each runner advanced into scoring position after a passed ball. Then Vazquez hit a two RBI single to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.
 
Peru State scored two runs on two hits in the bottom of the first inning. Peru State and Park both went down in an order in the second inning. In the third inning the offenses were still stagnant for both teams.
 
The Bobcats threatened in the bottom of the fourth inning as they loaded the bases after McLeod drew a walk, Efrain Torres (Aibonito, P.R.) hit a single and Pavletich walked. The Bobcats would leave the bases juiced after a strikeout.
 
Park tied the game in the top of the fifth from a two RBI double to make the score 2-2. The Pirates scored two runs on two hits and left one on. Peru State still struggled to bring a run across the plate as they were only able to draw a walk.
 
The Pirates threatened in the top of the sixth with runners on the corners but were unable to bring anyone home. Vazquez in the home half of the sixth hit a leadoff home run to give the Bobcats a 3-2 lead. McLeod then doubled but unfortunately, the Bobcats were not able to bring in any more runs.
 
Park was able to score at the top of the seventh via a throwing error by the third baseman. The Pirates scored one run on two errors and left two on.
 
Reynolds was the hero in the second game of the series as he hit a walk off home run with two outs to give Peru State the 4-3 win.
 
Falero pitched 5.1 innings striking out five batters giving up two runs on five hits each run was earned. Vazquez pitched 1.2 innings striking out three batters giving up one run on no hits none were earned as he earned the win.
Vazquez also led the way in hits and RBIs two hits and three RBIs on the day.
 
Game 3 vs. Park W 3-2  (Parkville, Mo.)
 
In the first inning of the third game of the series the Bobcats scored two runs right away. Peru State was able to load the bases from being hit by pitch and singles from Reynolds and Bradford. Aberg was able to score the first run of the game on a passed ball.
 
Then a productive groundout from Vazquez gave the Bobcats a 2-0 lead. Peru State scored two runs on two hits and left two on. Both teams left runners on in the second and third innings. Park was able to draw a walk in the top of the fourth but that was all for the Pirates.
 
Peru State went three up three down in the bottom of the fourth and same for Park in the top of the fifth. Park was able to tie the game in the top of the sixth inning from an RBI single and the Pirates were able to tie the game on a balk.
 
Park scored two runs on three hits and left two on. The Bobcats loaded the bases with a single from Pavletich, a single from Jimenez and Medina was hit by a pitch. Aberg then hit a sac-fly to center field to make the score 3-2.
 
Peru State scored one run on two hits and left two on base. Peru State would come away with the 3-2 victory.
 
Kevin Diaz (Dominican Republic) earned the win pitching a complete game striking out eight batters giving up two runs on four hits each run was earned.
 
Reynolds led the way in hits with two and Aberg and Vazquez each brought in an RBI.
 
The win also earned head coach Wayne Albury's 300th with the Bobcat program.
 
Game 4 vs. Park W 2-1 (Parkville, Mo.)
 
It was a pitcher's duel for the first five innings of the final game as the Pirates nor the Bobcats could break through to score. Park in the top of the sixth inning moved a runner over to scoring position from a sac bunt. Then an RBI single scored the first run of the game for either team.
 
In the home half of the sixth inning the Bobcats were able to tie the game basically in the exact same way Park had scored. Peru State moved a runner over via a sac bunt. Then an Aberg RBI single tied the game at one.
 
Park went three up three down in the top of the seventh. Bradford hit a leadoff double in the top of the seventh. Bradford then advanced to third on a passed ball.
 
The Pirates then opted to intentionally walk two batters with one out to load the bases and try and get the force at home. Pavletich then drew a walkoff walk as the Bobcats won the game 2-1.
 
Diego Oquendo (Merida, Venezuela) pitched a complete game striking out five batters giving up one earned run on five hits.
 
Aberg and Bradford each got a hit. Aberg and Pavletich both had an RBI.
 
Peru State returns home this weekend to face Clarke on Saturday, April 1 and Sunday, April 2, for a four-game series. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m. each day.
