(Peru, Neb.)—The Peru State softball team picked up its first win of the season against York in the second Dordt Tournament. Unfortunately, they went 1-3 in tournament play bringing its record to 1-7 overall on the year.
Below is a breakdown of how each game of the tournament went…
Game 1 v. York W 3-0
Neither team could get much going offensively for the first two and a half innings of action. The bottom of the third
Kylee Dieckmann (Holton, Kan.) led off with a single from a bunt. Then
Jami Mans (Fairbury) hit an RBI triple bringing Dieckmann into score.
Autumn Dixon (Stillwell, Kan.) had a sacrifice foul out that led to a second run for the Bobcats. Peru State scored two runs on two hits and left no one on base.
York was able to get a lead off single but was not able to bring the runner around to score in the top of the fourth.
Lanie Dreyer (Anniston, Ala.) was able to draw a leadoff walk and stole second but Peru State left the runner stranded.
In the top of the fifth inning the Bobcats made a huge play in the field to keep the game scoreless. The Panthers were able to get a runner in scoring position after a single and a stolen base. Then it looked as if they would score their first run off a single but a play at the plate kept York scoreless in the fifth.
Ellie Ohlde (Fairbury) hit a one-out double to get the Bobcats into scoring position. Then Mans kept the bats hot as she recorded and RBI single and extended Peru State's lead 3-0.
York and Peru State went three up three down in the sixth inning. The Panthers reached on an error in the top of the seventh but then three strikeouts led to the Bobcats first win of the season.
Dreyer earned the win pitching a complete game striking out nine batters giving up no runs on five hits.
Mans led the way in hits and RBIs both with two each.
Game 2 v. Mount Marty L 5-4
In the top of the first inning against Mount Marty, Peru State was able to get a two-out rally going.
Olivia Gordon (Oskaloosa, Iowa) singled to get on base then
Andrea Page (Palisade) hit an RBI double to bring the first run around for the Bobcats.
Peru State scored one run on two hits and left one on in the first. The Lancers could not get much going in the home half of the inning. Peru State kept the bats hot in the top of the second inning.
Maddie Howard (Council Bluffs, Iowa) hit a one out single and then
Camryn Craddock (Waverly) reached on an error as the Bobcats had runners on the corners.
Ohlde then hit a two RBI triple extending Peru State's lead by three up 3-0. The Bobcats scored two runs on two hits an error and left one on in the top of the second.
The Lancers were able to tie the game at three all in the bottom of the second. Mount Marty was able to get the bases loaded with an error and two walks. Then a two RBI double blasted down the left field line tied the game at 3-3.
Peru State was able to score in the top of the third as they had runners on the corners after Gordon walked and stole second. Then
Sophia Summers (Gardner, Kan.) singled. Howard then singled scoring Gordon to make the score 4-3 in the top of third inning.
Madison Hundley (Atchison, Kan.) was able to draw a walk and load the bases for the Bobcats but Peru State could not do any more damage.
The Bobcats scored one run on two hits and left three on base in the third.
It was a defensive game for the next few innings as neither team could get a run across the plate. In the sixth inning the Bobcats were able to get two runners in scoring position after
Morgan Wilke (Bakersfield, Calif.) hit a double and Howard had reached on an error.
The Lancers were able to get a baserunner all the way to third base but were not able to bring the runner home.
The Bobcats were able to get two base runners on from a single by Mans and a walk from Summers. A groundout unfortunately ended the half inning.
Mount Marty started off the home half of the seven inning reaching on an error then a triple tied the game at four. The Lancers then won the game 5-4 after an error.
Cheyenne Leach (Wymore) was credited with the loss pitching 4.1 innings striking out five batters giving up two runs on five hits none of the runs were earned.
Bailey Bitz (Ravenna) pitched 1.2 innings striking out two batters giving up three runs on two hits none were earned.
Howard led the way in hits with two and Ohlde led the way in RBIs with two.
Game 3 @ Dordt L 9-2
Peru State played Dordt for the third time this season on Saturday, February 18. In the first inning not much happened for the Bobcats or the Defenders.
Peru State broke open the scoring in the second inning as Dreyer hit a leadoff double. Dreyer moved into third after a wild pitch. Wilke then walked as the Bobcats had runners on the corners.
Dieckmann hit an RBI single as Peru State led 1-0. The Bobcats were not able to score anymore runs as they had one run on two hits and left two on in the top of the second.
The Defenders were able to plate five in the second, the first run came from an RBI single to tie the game at one. Dordt then loaded the bases from two more singles. A grand slam then broke the game wide open as the Defenders now led 5-1.
Mans and Dixon got on base with two singles back-to-back in the top of third inning. Then an RBI single from
Kaelyn Hamblen (Papillion) had the Bobcats down only three trailing 5-2. A single by Dreyer had the bases loaded for the Bobcats.
A double play ended a promising inning for Peru State. The Bobcats scored one run on four hits and left two on.
The Defenders were able to get two runners aboard in the bottom of the third but a pick off and a strike out ended the half inning.
Peru State went 1-2-3 in the top of the fourth and Dordt was able to get a runner in scoring position after a single and a stolen base but not much to show in the fourth for either team.
The Bobcats again went three up three down in the top of the fifth. Dordt was able to score its sixth run of the game after an RBI double. Later in the inning after a walk for the Defenders they scored their seventh run of the game from an RBI single.
Dordt led Peru State 7-2 after five innings of play.
The Bobcats threatened in the top of the sixth after back-to-back singles but they could not get any runners home in the sixth. Peru State was held scoreless on two hits no errors and left two on base.
The Defenders scored twice more in the home half of the sixth after back-to-back RBI triples. Dordt would go on to win the game 9-2.
Bitz was credited with the loss pitching two innings striking out one batter giving up five runs on four hits all five were earned.
Dreyer pitched three innings striking out three batters giving up two runs on six hits each run was earned.
Leach pitched one inning striking out two batters giving up two runs on three hits each run was earned.
Dreyer led the way in hits with three. Dieckmann and Hamblen were each credited with an RBI.
Game 4 v. Northwestern College L 5-1
Peru State faced off against Northwestern College for the second time this season. The Bobcats were able to get on the board first in the bottom of the first inning.
Ohlde singled in the top of the first later in the inning Page singled as the Bobcats had runners on the corners.
Kylee Weiss (El Dorado, Kan.) hit an RBI double as Peru State scored.
The Bobcats scored one run on three hits no errors and left two on base.
The offenses would then be stagnant for the next couple of innings. In the top of the fourth is where the Raiders did most of their damage.
Northwestern tied the game at one with an RBI double. The Raiders then took the lead after an RBI single up 2-1. Later in the fourth inning the Raiders had the bases juiced and then scored two more runs on an error as Northwestern extended its lead 4-1.
The Raiders scored four runs on four hits an error and left two on base in the fourth inning.
The offenses then remained cold for the next few innings. The Raiders scored their fifth and final run from a leadoff home run in the top of the sixth. Northwestern now led Peru State 5-1.
Peru State's defense stepped up later in the inning tagging a runner out as she was trying to steal home. The Raiders were able to score one run on two hits an error and left one on in the sixth.
Peru State went three up three down in the home half of the sixth. Northwestern was able to get a double in the top of the seventh but nothing after that.
In the final half inning
Carlye Rothschild (Eros, La.) hit a leadoff single but then three strikeouts ended the game.
Leach pitched a complete game striking out two batters giving up five runs on nine hits and three were earned.
Five players tied for one hit and Weiss was the lone RBI.
Peru State has its home opener schedule for Tuesday, February 28, a doubleheader vs. Briar Cliff. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
