(Peru, Neb.)—The Peru State baseball team picked up its first series win of the year at Friends winning 2-out-of-3 over the weekend. The Bobcats improve to 2-4 overall on the season while the Falcons are now 4-3 overall.
Below is a breakdown of how the three-game series went…
Game 1 @ Friends W 5-4 (F/10)
First game of the series was an exhilarating extra inning one-run win for the Bobcats. Neither team could get much going offensively in the first inning as the Bobcats mustered one hit and the Falcons were able to get one player on from a hit-by-pitch but that was it.
Peru State went three up three down in the top of the second. Friends had runners in scoring position in the home half of the second after reaching on an error and a double into left. The Falcons were able to score the first run of the game on an error.
Friends scored one run on one hit an error and left one on base.
Angel Andrades (Humacao, P.R.) led off the top of the third with a single. The Bobcats were able to load the bases from a fielder' choice and two walks but a fly out to left ended a promising inning for Peru State.
Friends did not have much action going in the bottom half of the third inning. The Bobcats had a two out rally going in the top of the fourth after Wes Bradford
(Bakersfield, Calif.) singled and Andrades walked but a fly out ended the half inning.
The Falcons broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning as three doubles in a row scored the next two runs for Friends making the score 3-0. Later in the inning an RBI single scored the fourth run of the game as the Falcons led 4-0.
Friends scored three runs on four hits and left one on base.
Peru State in the top of the fifth got singles from
Ivan Medina (Maracaibo, Venezuela) and
Jacob Aberg (Lincoln). Although Aberg was thrown out trying to take second Medina advanced to third.
A sac-fly from
Josue Vazquez (Salinas, P.R.) scored the first run of the game for Peru State. The Bobcats scored one run on three hits and left one stranded. The Falcons in the bottom of the fifth were able to get a few hits but did not bring any runs across the plate.
A leadoff walk from
Randy Jimenez (Santiago De Los Caballeros) and a single from Bradford had the Bobcats threatening. Peru State was able to score one run in the top of the sixth as they now trailed 4-2.
Friends mustered only one hit in the home half of the inning. Peru State had two singles in the top of the seventh but left both runners stranded. The Falcons went down in order in the seventh.
Peru State had a promising start to the eighth inning after a walk from Bradford and a one out single from
Efrain Torres (Aibonito, P.R.) but a pick off and a foul out ended the promising inning.
Friends mustered one hit in the bottom of the eighth inning. Peru State in the top of the ninth inning were able to load the bases after Aberg was hit-by-pitch, Will Reynolds
(Bakersfield, Calif.) and
Yodelvy Garcia was hit-by-pitch.
A Jimenez walk brought in the third run of the game for Peru State and then a wild pitch scored the tying run as it was now 4-4 in the ninth. Friends went three up three down in the home half of the ninth inning.
In the extra inning Medina got on base with a one out walk, then Medina advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Medina then came home for the go ahead run after an error by the catcher.
Peru State led 5-4 going into the bottom of the tenth. Peru State ended with the 5-4 win in extra innings.
Micah McLeod (Franklin County, Fla.) was the winning pitcher with four innings pitched and six strikeouts.
Garrett Pavletich (Bakersfield, Calif.) pitched in three innings with three strikeouts giving up four hits but no earned runs.
Fernando Falero (Carolina, P.R.) pitched in three innings striking out two batters and giving up three earned runs on four hits.
Aberg, Bradford, Reynolds and Torres each tied for the lead in hits with two each. Jimenez and Vazquez each had an RBI.
Game 2 @ Friends L 9-0 (F/9)
The second game of the series for the Bobcats did not go as well as the first. Peru State went three up three down in the first inning and gave up three runs on two hits in the bottom of the first from two doubles and a one out walk that started it.
Friends had three runs on two hits and left two on base in the first inning.
Peru State was able to get one batter on base in the second but still could not muster any offense. Friends bats stayed hot in the second as they had two players on base after two singles. Then a passed ball scored the fourth run of the game from the Falcons.
A two out three-run home run made the score 7-0 Falcons two innings into the game. Not much happened in the third and fourth innings for either team.
Peru State recorded its first hit of the game in the fifth from a McLeod single but baserunners were hard to come by in game two of the series.
The top of the sixth inning looked promising for the Bobcats as Medina led off with a double. Medina would advance to third later in the inning but a groundout ended any threat for the Bobcats.
The Falcons left two on base in the bottom of the sixth and in the top of the seventh the Bobcats went 1-2-3.
Friends scored its final two runs in the bottom of the seventh after an RBI double and then a two-out RBI single scored the ninth run for the Falcons. Friends led 9-0 after seven innings of play.
Torres hit a one out double in the top of the eighth inning but that's all the Bobcats could muster in the top of the eighth.
Friends did not manage much in eighth besides a single and a hit-by-pitch . Peru State lost game two 9-0 after leaving two more on base in the top of the ninth.
Diego Oquendo (Merida, Venezuela) was credited with loss pitching in two innings giving up seven earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
Wikander Gutierrez pitched in three innings and had two strikeouts.
Luis Pacheco (Miami, Fla.) pitched in 1.2 innings giving up two earned runs on four hits and two Ks.
Josue Cisnero (Santo Domingo, P.R.) pitched in 1.1 innings giving up a hit.
Garcia, Medina, McLeod and Torres all had one hit each.
Game 3 @ Friends W 4-3 (F/7)
Peru State started off the third and final game with a bang scoring two runs on five hits. Aberg led off the game with a single and then stole second to get into scoring position. Reynolds then singled as the Bobcats had runners on the corners.
Singles by Garcia and Andrades scored the first two runs of the game for the Bobcats.
Friends were able to get two hits in the bottom of the first inning but a double play ended the threat of the Falcons tying or taking the lead in the first.
Peru State went 1-2-3 in the top of the second. A double and a stolen base had the Falcons threatening for their first run 90-feet away from the plate. No damage was done as the Bobcats kept them in check.
Vazquez led off the top of the third with a single but then a double play had the base path cleared. A walk and a single had Peru State in dangerous scoring position but a fielder's choice ended the inning.
Two singles and an error had the Falcons get on the board in the bottom of the third as the score was now 2-1. Friends scored one run on two hits an error and left two on base.
Jimenez in the top of the fourth hit a one out double and then a Medina single scored the third run of the game for the Bobcats as they led 3-1.
Peru State in the fifth inning started with a leadoff walk from Vazquez, a couple of fielder's choices and an error led to the Bobcats fourth run of the game up 4-1.
The Bobcats scored one run on no hits an error and left on one base in the fifth.
Two doubles in the bottom of the fifth inning scored the second run of the game for the Falcons. The Bobcats were able to get one hit in the top of the sixth inning but that was all for Peru State.
Two singles for the Falcons in the bottom of the sixth had Friends threatening. A sac-fly then got the Falcons within one run as they trailed 4-3.
Peru State was able to get one on base via an error in the top of the seventh but nothing after that. Friends was able to get one player aboard on an error in the final inning but a double play and a fly out ended the game as Peru State held on for the 4-3 win.
Kevin Diaz was credited as the winning pitcher with six innings pitched giving up three earned runs on nine hits and six strikeouts. McLeod earned the save.
Medina led the way in hits with two while Reynolds led the way in RBIs with two.
Peru State will be on the road this weekend Friday, February 17, and Saturday, February 18, for a four game series with Oklahoma Panhandle State University in Goodwell, Okla. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
