Peru State Baseball Falls to No. 12 Central Methodist in Heart Conference Tournament

(Peru, Neb.)—On Friday, May 6, the Peru State baseball team fell to No. 12 Central Methodist 6-3. Peru State earned the six seed in the tournament and Central Methodist was the three seed. The Bobcats are now 21-32 overall on the season while the Eagles are 39-12.
 
In the top of the first inning the Eagles hit a leadoff single, then a double scored the first run of the game for the Eagles. Then with one down CMU drew a walk to have the Eagles threatening with runners on first and second.
 
The next batter reached on a fielder's choice as the Eagles now had runners on the corners. Then the runner stole second to put pressure on the Bobcat defense. A strikeout ended the top half of the first inning as the Eagles had one run on two hits and left two on base.
 
Xavier Wright (Calumet City, Ill.) drew a leadoff walk in the first but then a fly out and a double play ended the first inning. The Bobcats had no runs on no hits and left no one on.
 
The Eagles and the Bobcats both went down in order in the second inning. The Eagles hit a leadoff single in the top of the third inning. Then the base runner stole second. A sac bunt moved the runner over to the third. Then a hit a by pitch had the Eagles with runners on the corners. The base runner then stole second as the Eagles threatened with runners in scoring position.
 
A double then scored two runs as CMU now led Peru State 3-0 in the third. The Eagles scored two runs on two hits and left one on base. The 'Cats went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the third inning.
 
CMU hit a leadoff double in the top of the fourth inning, then a productive ground out moved the runner 90-feet away from the plate. A single scored the fourth run of the game for the Eagles. Peru State caught a runner trying to steal second and then a strike out ended the top half of the fourth. The Eagles scored one run on two hits and left no one on base.
 
William Reynolds (Bakersfield, Calif.) and Wesley Bradford (Bakersfield, Calif.) hit back-to-back singles as the 'Cats threatened with runners on first and second. Jose Solis (Los Santos, Panama) hit a single, but Reynolds was thrown out at home, so the Bobcats stayed scoreless. Then Jesus Tavarez (Santo Domingo, D.R.) blasted a three run home run over the right center fence as the Bobcats now trailed by one 4-3. Peru State scored three runs on four hits and left no one on base.
 
The Eagles hit a leadoff single in the top of the fifth and then a walk and a stolen base had runners on the corners. A second walk with one down, loaded the bases for CMU, but a strike out and a ground out ended the half inning as the Eagles had no runs on one hit and left three on base.
 
Johannes Booyens (Johannesburg, South Africa) with one down hit a triple as the 'Cats threatened to tie the game. A lineout ended the half inning. Peru State scored no runs on one hit and left one on base.
 
CMU, with two down hit a single and then advanced to second on an error. The base runner then stole third. A fly out ended any threat from the Eagles in the top of the sixth inning. CMU had no runs on one hit, an error and left one on base.
 
Reynolds hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the sixth but then was caught stealing in a double play situation. A line out ended the inning. The Bobcats had no runs on one hit and left no one on base.
 
The Eagles with one down in the top of the seventh hit a single and then walked to put pressure on the 'Cats with runners on first and second. Then a double play ended the inning. The Eagles scored no runs on one hit and left one on base.
 
Tavarez hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh inning. Then Angel Andrades (Humacao, P.R.) hit a sac bunt to move Tavarez to second. Tavarez would be left stranded after a strike out and a ground out ended the half inning. The Bobcats had no runs on one hit and left one on.
 
CMU drew a leadoff walk in the top of the eighth, then a single had runners on first and second. The Eagles loaded the bases with one down in the eighth via a walk. A double with two outs then scored two Eagle runners doubling up the 'Cats leading 6-3. CMU scored two runs on two hits and left two on base.
 
Booyens in the bottom of the eighth hit a leadoff single but was later caught stealing. Then with two outs Reynolds and Bradford drew walks as the 'Cats threatened with runners on first and second. A fly out ended the inning. Peru State had no runs on one hit and left two on base.
 
CMU went three up three down in the top of the ninth. Tavarez drew a leadoff walk in the final half inning and then advanced to third on two passed balls. Andrades then walked as the Bobcats had runners on the corners. A strikeout and a double play ended the game. Peru State lost to CMU 6-3.
 
Sebastian Rodriguez (Cayey, P.R.) pitched seven innings, striking out eight batters giving up four runs on nine hits-the four runs were earned. S. Rodriguez took the loss. Luis Rodriguez (Carolina, P.R.) pitched two innings, striking out two batters giving up two runs on two hits-the two runs were earned.
 
Booyens, Reynolds and Tavarez tied for hits with two in the game. Tavarez led the way in RBIs with three.
 
Peru State will face the loser of No. 2 Clarke and No.7 Park in an elimination game on Saturday, May, 7,  at approximately 1:30 p.m. at US Ballpark in Ozark, Missouri.
