Peru State Baseball Sweeps Evangel

(Peru, Neb.)—Over the weekend on Friday, April 1 and Saturday, Saturday April 2, the Peru State baseball team swept Evangel in a four-game series. The Bobcats improve to 12-20 on the year and 10-4 in Heart conference play, the Valor drop to 15-17 on the year and 6-10 in conference play.
 
Below is a breakdown of how each game of the series went:
 
 
Game 1
 
In the top of the first inning Evangel drew a one out walk the runner would advance to second via a wild pitch. Then a single put runners on the corners.
 
The Valor scored on a wild pitch for the first run of the game. Evangel scored one run on one hit and left on one.
 
Wesley Bradford (Bakersfield, Calif.) hit a two out double, but the Bobcats were not able to bring the runner home. Peru State had no runs on one hit and left one on.
 
The Valor in the second drew a two out walk but the runner would be caught stealing at second base to end the half inning. Angel Andrades (Humacao, P.R.) hit a one out double and then Blake Denson (Broken Bow) came into pinch run.
 
Devin Adams (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) blasted one over the fence as the 'Cats took a 2-1 lead. Peru State would threaten again with two outs as Garrett Pavletich (Bakersfield, Calif.) drew a walk and then Johan Booyens (Johannesburg, South Africa) reached on an error.
 
The 'Cats could not extend their lead. They scored two runs on two hits an error and left two on in the home half of the second.
 
The Valor started the third inning with a leadoff single, then the runner advanced to second on a wild pitch with one out. Evangel got one more base runner on from a walk but a double play would end the half inning.
 
Jose Solis (Los Santos, Panama) drew a one out walk but would be out after Jesus Tavares (Santo Domingo, D.R.) reached on a fielder's choice. Tavares then stole second, an Andrades single would make the score 3-1 'Cats.
 
Denson came into pinch run for Andrades. Adams then doubled scoring Denson as the score was now 4-1. Peru State scored two runs on two hits and left one on.
 
The Valor started the top of the fourth inning with a walk and a hit by pitch as they threatened with runners on first and second. The runners would move into scoring position from a fly out and a wild pitch. A sac fly to center field scored the Valor runner from third. Evangel scored one run on no hits and left one on.
 
William Reynolds (Bakersfield, Calif.) hit a two out single and would advance into scoring position via an error. The Bobcats were unable to capitalize as they scored no runs on one hit an error and one left on.

Evangel started the fifth inning with a leadoff single. They were not able to get anything going after that offensively. The Valor scored no runs on one hit and left one on.
 
The 'Cats went three up three down in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Valor started the top of the sixth with a leadoff walk. Then a Valor batter reached first on an error as they threatened with runners on first and second with one out. A double play would end the inning for the Valor as they scored no runs on no hits an error and left one on.
 
Xavier Wright (Calumet City, Ill.) hit a one out double and then Pavletich walked as the 'Cats threatened with two runners on. Unfortunately, a double play would end the inning for Peru State. They scored no runs on one hit and left one on.
 
The Bobcats closed the deal in the seventh with a three up three down inning.
 
Sebastian Rodriguez (Cayey, P.R.) pitched six innings striking out five batters giving up two runs on three hits the two runs were earned. He would take the win. Adams came in for the save as he struck out a batter pitching in the final inning.
 
Adams and Andrades tied for the lead in hits as they both had two. Adams led the way in RBIs in game one as he had three.
 
Game 2
 
The Valor threatened right away in game two as they loaded the bases with one out from two walks and a single in between. Enmanuel Cabrera (Villa Gonzalez, D.R.) made an incredible double play from the mound as he gloved a sharp liner and then threw out the runner trying to get back to third. The Valor scored no runs on one hit and left two on.
 
Reynolds drew a one out walk and then stole second to put a Bobcat runner in scoring position. A Bradford triple sent Reynolds home for the first run of the game. Then a Solis sac fly to center field would make the score 2-0 Bobcats. Peru State scored two runs on one hit and left no one on.
 
The Valor went three up three down in the second inning. Andrades started the second inning with a leadoff single. Denson came into pinch run and got 90-feet away from the plate by way of a wild pitch and a ground out. The 'Cats could not bring him home. Peru State had no runs on one hit and left one on.
 
Evangel drew a leadoff walk in the top of the third inning and he would advance to second later in the inning with a wild pitch. The Valor were not able to bring him home as they scored no runs on no hits and left one on.
 
Booyens and Reynolds hit back-to-back singles to start the home half of the third as the 'Cats had runners on the corners. Booyens then scored on a wild pitch as Reynolds stole second. Peru State scored one run on two hits and left no one on as they led 3-0.
 
The Valor were able to get a two out single but were unable to bring the runner around in the fourth. The 'Cats went 1-2-3 in the fourth.
 
Evangel threatened in the fifth with one out as they got base runners on from a single and a walk, again they were not able to capitalize as the 'Cat defense stepped up.
 
Pavletich in the home half of the fifth singled with one out. Doel Pina (Fajardo, P.R.) came into pinch run. Reynolds drew a walk with two outs, but the Bobcats could not extend their lead. Peru State scored no runs on one hit and left two on.
 
The Valor were able to get two runners on from a single and a walk, but the Bobcats would not allow a Valor runner to get to the plate in game two. Evangel scored no runs on one hit and left two on.
 
Andrades hit a solo shot with two outs in the sixth to extend the 'Cats lead to 4-0. Peru State scored one run on one hit and left no one on.
 
The Valor were able to draw a two out walk but the Bobcats ended up shutting out the Valor in game two with a 4-0 win.
 
Cabrera pitched 5.2 innings striking out four batters giving up no runs on four hits. He would take the win. Juan Rodriquez (Bayamon, P.R.) struck out one batter in the .1 innings he pitched. Adams came in for the save as he pitched one inning and struck out two batters.
 
Andrades, Booyens, Bradford and Reynolds all tied for the lead in hits with one each. Andrades, Bradford and Solis all tied for RBIs with one each.
 
Game 3
 
The Bobcats won a defensive battle in game one as a couple of first inning runs would be the difference maker.
 
In the top of the first the Valor were able to get a two out double but a tough weekend at the plate continued as they were not able to bring him in. Evangel had no runs on one hit and left one on base.
 
The 'Cats offense started hot as Booyens led off with a single in the bottom of the first. Then Reynolds singled and both runners advanced into scoring position on a balk.
 
Then a productive ground out from Bradford scored the first run of the game. Then another productive ground out from Solis scored Reynolds as the Bobcats led 2-0 early. Peru State scored two runs on two hits and left no one on.
 
The Valor started the second with a leadoff single, but the runner was caught trying to steal second. Evangel scored no runs on one hit and left no one on in the second. Peru State went three up three down in the second.
 
The third inning was rough for both teams as they would go down in order. Evangel went 1-2-3 again in the top of the fourth.
 
Solis hit a one out single in the home half of the fourth inning, but the 'Cats could not get anything offensively. Peru State had no runs on one hit and left Solis stranded.
 
In the fifth the Valor would get on right away from an error. Then the Valor could not get the runner in scoring position as he was bounced in a fielder's choice. Later in the inning Evangel did get a runner into scoring position from a sac bunt. The Valor left the runner stranded as they had no runs on no hits an error and one left on.
 
Adams started the bottom of the fifth with a leadoff single, but then would be picked off. Andrades came into pinch hit for Gustavo Rivera (Bayamon, P.R.) with two outs and he hit a single.
 
A fielder's choice would end the inning for the 'Cats. Peru State had no runs on two hits and left one on.
 
The Valor went three up three down in the sixth inning. Solis singled with one out in the sixth. Pina came into pinch run. A Tavares single would have the Bobcats threatening with runners on the corners. Peru State could not capitalize as they had no runs on two hits and left two on.
 
Evangel went down in order in the top of the seventh as Peru State would take the series with a 2-0 win. The Bobcats were now looking for the sweep in the final game of the series.
 
Edgar Santos (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) pitched five innings striking out three batters giving up no runs on two hits. Rodriguez came in for the save as he pitched two innings striking out one batter giving up no runs on no hits.
 
Solis led the way in hits in game three as he had two. Bradford and Solis tied for RBIs with one each.
 
Game 4
 
The Bobcat offense woke back up in the fourth game as they completed the series sweep of the Valor.
 
In the top of the first the Valor led off with a single. Then another single after a fielder's choice would have Evangel threatening with runners on first and second with one out.
 
Then another single would score the first run of the game for the Valor. Evangel was still threatening with two runners in scoring position after the single the runner advanced to second.
 
A walk would load the bases, but the 'Cats would get out of the inning. Evangel scored one run on three hits and left three on base.
 
Three walks from Booyens, Reynolds and Bradford would juice the bags for the Bobcats in the bottom of the first. Then a two out single by Andrades would score two runs as Peru State took a 2-1 lead. Denson came into to run for Andrades.
 
Later in the inning Adams drew a walk to load the bases for the second time in the first inning. Then a walk by Wright would send Bradford home. Pavletich would then single as two more Bobcat runners would come into score as Peru State now led 5-1. Peru State scored five runs on two hits and left two on.
 
The Valor went three up three down in the top of the second inning. The 'Cats also went three up three down in the second.
 
Evangel started the top of the third with two singles and then a stolen bag would have the Valor threatening with runners in scoring position. Then a sac fly to center field would score one Valor runner. A single would put Evangel back within two as they were now down 5-3. The Valor scored two runs on three hits and left one on.
 
Peru State went down in order in the bottom of the third. Both teams went three up three down in the fourth inning. The Valor went 1-2-3 in the top of the fifth.
 
Bradford singled with one out in the home half of the fifth then a stolen bag and advance would have him 90-feet away from the plate. Solis hit a sac fly to right field as the 'Cats doubled up the Valor leading 6-3.
 
Then two singles from Tavares and Andrades put the pressure on as Peru State had runners on first and second. Denson came in to pinch run for Andrades. Adams walked later in the inning to load the bases for the 'Cats.
 
A Wright walk would bring in Tavares as the Bobcats led 7-3. Then a three RBI single from Pavletich had the 'Cats up 10-3. Pina came into run for Pavletich as he had advance to second.
 
The bases were loaded again for Peru State after Booyens walked and Reynolds singled. Then a walk from Bradford scored Pina as Peru State was now up 11-3. The 'Cats scored six runs on five hits and left three on in the bottom of the fifth.

The Valor singled with one out in the sixth, then a two out single had the Valor threatening with runners on first and second. A third single of the inning scored one run for Evangel. The Valor threatened with runners on the corners after a passed ball but were unable to capitalize. Evangel scored one run on three hits and left two on.
 
Diego Rivera (Carolina, P.R.) hit a single to lead off the bottom half of the sixth. Tavares came into pinch run for Rivera. Tavares would get into scoring position via a wild pitch. Peru State left Tavares stranded as they had no runs on one hit and left one on.
 
The Valor started the top of the seventh with two walks as they threatened with runners on first and second. Evangel was unable to capitalize, and Peru State completed the series sweep.
 
Diego Oquendo (Merida, Venezuela) pitched six innings striking out four batters giving up four runs on nine hits all four runs were earned. He would take the win. John Laureano (Gurabo, P.R.) rounded out the pitching for the 'Cats as he pitched one inning striking out one batter giving up no runs on no hits.
 
Andrades and Pavletich led the way in hits in game four as each of them had two knocks. Pavletich led the way in RBIs with four.
 
Peru State will hit the road next week as they have a four-game series at Graceland. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. each day.
