(Peru, Neb.)—The Peru State Bobcats went 1-3 against Clarke on the road for their final road series of the season. Peru State is now 21-27 overall and 18-10 in Heart conference play while Clarke is 33-13 and 18-9 in conference play.
Below is a breakdown of how each game of the series went…
Game 1
Wesley Bradford (Bakersfield, Calif.) with one down in the top of the first inning singled to right and then stole second as the 'Cats had a runner in scoring position early.
Jose Solis (Los Santos, Panama) then singled as Peru State had runners on first and second. Solis was then caught stealing. Jesus Tavares
(Santo Domingo, D.R.) drew a walk with two down, but the 'Cats left two stranded as they had no runs on two hits in the first inning.
Clarke had runners on the corners in the bottom of the first after a leadoff hit by pitch and a single. The Pride scored the first run of the game from a sac fly to center field. The base runner stole second with one down, with two down he stole third to get 90-feet away from the plate. Clarke had one run on one hit and left one on base.
Devin Adams (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) was able to get aboard from a hit by pitch, but then was caught stealing second. A strikeout ended the half inning for Peru State.
Clarke led off the bottom of the second with a home run. Then the next batter reached first on an error. A sac bunt had the Pride runner move into scoring position. A double with two down in the inning scored another Pride runner as they now led 3-0. Clarke had two runs on two hits, an error and left one on.
Peru State tried to get a two out rally going in the top of the third as Bradford doubled, then Solis reached on an error and Tavares walked to load the bases. A line out ended a promising two out rally for the 'Cats. Peru State had no runs on one hit, an error and left three on base.
Clarke in the home half of the third inning, hit a two out double but they had a quiet inning offensively. The Pride had no runs on one hit and left one on base.
Josue Francisco (San Cristobal, D.R.) hit a leadoff home run in the top of the fourth as the Bobcats had trimmed the Pride lead to two.
Xavier Wright (Calumet City, Ill.) reached on an error but then a strike out and caught stealing ended the half inning.
Three singles with one down in the bottom half of the fourth inning had the Pride load the bases. Then a wild pitch scored the fourth run of the game for the Pride. Then a two RBI single with two down in the fourth had the Pride leading the Bobcats 6-1. Clarke scored three runs on four hits and left one on.
Peru State went three up three down in the top of the fifth inning. Clarke was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the fifth. Then a sac bunt moved the runner into scoring position. Clarke would leave the runner stranded on third after a fly out and a ground out ended the fifth.
Angel Andrades (Humacao, P.R.) hit a double with one out in the sixth.
Blake Denson (Broken Bow) pinch ran for Andrades. A ground out advanced Denson to third but a strike out ended the inning as the Bobcats had no runs on one hit and left one on.
Clarke drew a walk with one down in the sixth, then a triple scored two runs as there was an error. The Pride now led 8-1. The next batter singled, but that was all the damage done for Clarke as they had two runs on two hits, an error and left one on base.
Peru State went down in order in the final inning as they lost the first game of the series with Clarke 8-1.
Jose Diana (Santa Isabel, P.R.) pitched four innings striking out seven batters, giving up six runs on eight hits-four runs were earned. Diana took the loss.
Jan Vargas (Juncos, P.R.) pitched two innings striking out one batter, giving up two runs on two hits-none were earned.
Bradford led the team in game one with two hits. Francisco had the lone RBI in game one.
Game 2
In the top of the first Bradford singled with one down but then was caught stealing. The Bobcats had a quiet first inning.
Clarke led off the second game with a hit by pitch, a sac bunt moved the runner into scoring position. A single then had Pride runners in scoring position. Then an error scored the first run of the game for Clarke. The next batter reached first on an error. The Pride had one run on one hit, two errors and left two on.
Tavares hit a leadoff single in the top of the first and then Andrades drew a walk as the Bobcats had runners on first and second. Denson came into pinch run for Andrades. Then Adams reached first on a fielder's choice and loaded the bases for the 'Cats. Wright then advanced on a fielder's choice as Peru State tied the game at one. The Bobcats scored one run on one hit, an error and left two on base.
Clarke went three up three down in the bottom of the second inning.
Johannes Booyens (Johannesburg, South Africa) hit a leadoff single in the top of the first. The base runner was then bounced in a double play. A strikeout ended the half inning for the Bobcats.
The Pride led the bottom of the third off with a double, then a bunt and error scored the second run of the game for Clarke. The Pride had one run on one hit, an error and left one on as they now led 2-1.
Tavares hit a leadoff single in the top of the fourth, but then three quick outs ended the half inning for the 'Cats. Clarke reached first on an error to start the fourth, then a single had runners on first and second.
A double with one down scored the third run of the game for Clarke as they now led 3-1. The Pride drew a walk with two down as Clarke loaded the bases, but a fly out ended the inning. Clarke had one run on two hits, an error and left three on base.
Wright hit a leadoff single in the top of the fifth and then stole second to get into scoring position. Then
Garrett Pavletich (Bakersfield, Calif.) walked as Peru State had runs on first and second. A sac bunt from Booyens had both runners move into scoring position. Then Wright scored on a passed ball as the 'Cats trimmed the lead to one.
Solis then reached on an error with two down in the inning and Pavletich came into score to tie the game at three. Tavares was then hit by a pitch as the threat continued with runners on first and second for the 'Cats. Peru State scored two runs on one hit, an error and left two on base.
Clarke went three up three down in the bottom of the fifth inning. Peru State went 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth. Clarke hit a leadoff double in the home half of the sixth. Then with two down the runner advanced to third on a wild pitch. A single then broke the tie as the Pride now led 4-3. Clarke scored one run on two hits and left one on base.
Booyens singled with one down in the final inning but a fly out and a ground out ended the game as Clarke won the 4-3 barn burner.
Diego Oquendo (Merida, Venezuela) pitched six innings, striking out 12 batters giving up four runs on six hits-only one was earned.
Booyens and Tavares tied for the lead in hits with two each. Wright had the lone RBI in game two.
Game 3
In the top of the first inning the Bobcats went three up three down. The Pride in the bottom of the first drew a two out walk but three strikeouts ended a quiet inning.
Andrades hit a two out single in the top of the second,
Doel Pina (Fajardo, Puerto Rico) came into pinch run for Andrades. A strikeout ended the inning for the 'Cats. Peru State had no runs on one hit and left one on base.
Clarke went three up three down in the bottom of the second inning. Peru State went down in order in the top of the third inning. The Pride in the bottom of the third hit a one out single and then the runner advanced to second on an error. Clarke was able to load the bases from a hit by a pitch and a bunt.
Then with two down a single scored two runs for the Pride as they broke open the scoring. The Pride scored two runs on three hits, an error and left one on base.
Reynolds hit a leadoff single in the top of the fourth inning but then was caught stealing second. A ground out and a strikeout ended the half inning. Clarke reached first on an error with two down in the home half of the fourth and the runner advanced to second but would be left stranded.
Andrades singled to short with one down in the fifth, Pina came into pinch run. Then Adams singled as the 'Cats threatened with runners on first and second. A productive ground out from Denson had the runners move into scoring position. Unfortunately, a groundout ended the half inning as the Bobcats had no runs on two hits and left two on base.
Clarke went down in order in the bottom of the fifth inning. Booyens and Reynolds drew two walks as the 'Cats had runners on first and second in the top of the sixth. Then Bradford reached on a fielder's choice. With two down in the inning Tavares walked as the bases were juiced for the Bobcats.
Andrades then reached on an error as Bradford and Reynolds came around to score tying the game at two. Adams then hit an RBI single as the Bobcats now led 3-2. Peru State scored three runs on one hit, an error and left two on base.
Clarke went 1-2-3 in the home half of the sixth inning. The 'Cats and the Pride went three up three down in the seventh as Peru State held on for the 3-2 win.
Sebastian Rodriguez (Cayey, P.R.) pitched a complete game striking out 13 batters giving up two runs on three hits-the two runs were earned.
Adams and Andrades tied for the lead in hits in game three with two. Adams had the lone RBI.
Game 4
Peru State went down in order in the top of the first inning. Clarke was hit by a pitch to start game four, then a sac bunt moved the runner over to second. A fly out and a ground out ended the first inning for the Pride.
Andrades singled with two down in the second inning and Pina came into pinch run. A strikeout ended a short half inning for the 'Cats. The Pride singled with two down in the second and then stole second to get a runner into scoring position. The Clarke runner would be left stranded.
Peru State went 1-2-3 in the top of the third inning, The Pride led off the home half of the third with a bunt, then the runner would be bounced in a fielder's choice. With two down the runner on first stole second and then advanced 90-feet away from the plate on an error. A double scored the first run of the game for the Pride. Clarke scored one run on two hits, an error and left one on base.
Solis singled with two outs in the fourth inning but the 'Cats continued to struggle from the plate in game four as a groundout ended the half inning. The Pride threatened by reaching on an error and then stealing second with two outs. A walk had runners on first and second in the bottom of the fourth. A strikeout ended the fourth inning.
Peru State tried to start a two out rally as Denson singled, and then stole second base. Pavletich drew a walk. A strikeout ended the inning. The Bobcats had no runs on one hit and left two on. Clarke went three up three down in the home half of the fifth.
Bradford singled with one out in the sixth but then a double play ended the top half of the sixth inning. The Pride went down in order in the bottom of the sixth.
Tavares led off the seventh with a single. Then with two down Francisco singled as the 'Cats had runners on first and second. The runners advanced into scoring position from a wild pitch. A groundout ended the game as Peru State fell to Clarke 1-0.
Edgar Santos (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) pitched six innings striking out three batters giving up one run on three hits-the one run was earned.
Andrades, Bradford, Denson, Francisco, Solis and Tavares all tied for hits with one each in game four.
Peru State is at home for the final time this weekend as they host Grand View for a four-game series on Saturday, April 30, and Sunday, May 1. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. each day. Saturday will also be senior day.
