(Peru, Neb.)—On Saturday, April 23, the Peru State softball team split at Clarke winning the first game 3-1 and losing the second 8-0. The Bobcats are now 12-28 and 7-22 in Heart conference play while the Pride are 8-32 and 2-26 in conference play.
Below is a breakdown of how each game of the doubleheader went…
Game 1
Ellie Ohlde (Fairbury) drew a leadoff walk in the top of the first inning. Then
Payton Beckmann (Syracuse) hit a single as the 'Cats had runners on first and second.
Morgan Wilke (Bakersfield, Calif.) hit a single as Ohlde came around to score for the first run of the game.
Carli Kohout (Cortland) reached on a fielder's choice and then a single from
Jerica German (Cortland) had the Bobcats load the bases. Peru State left the bases juiced as they had one run on three hits and left three on base.
Clarke reached on an error in the bottom of the first and the runner advanced into scoring position, but the Pride were unable to bring the runner home to score. Clarke had no runs on no hits, an error and left one on.
Alaina Lacy (Lincoln) led off the second inning with a single. Then Ohlde singled but the runner would be thrown out trying to stretch it to third. Beckmann then reached on an error as the 'Cats had runners on first and second. A fielder's choice ended the inning for the Bobcats. Peru State had no runs on two hits an error and left two on.
The Pride threatened in the bottom of the second as a walk and a single had runners on first and second. Clarke was unable to score in the second as they had no runs on one hit and left two on base.
German with one down in the third hit one over the fence as the 'Cats now led 2-0. Peru State had one run on the home run and left no one on in the top of third. Clarke went three up three down in the third inning.
Autumn Dixon (Stillwell, Kan.) hit a double with one out in the top of the fourth inning and then an Ohlde single brought in the third run of the game for the Bobcats. Peru State had one run on two hits and left one on.
The Pride had a single with one down in the home half of the fourth but were unable to bring the runner to score as it remained 3-0 'Cats. Clarke had no runs on one hit and left one on.
Peru State went three up three down in the top of the fifth inning. Clarke hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth, but the base runner would be bounced in a fielder's choice. The Pride had no runs on one hit and left one on.
There was not much offense for the 'Cats in the sixth as the only base runner was Dixon with two down after being hit by a pitch. Peru State had no runs on no hits and left one on.
Clarke with one down hit a home run in the bottom of the sixth as the game got tense with the lead down to just two. Then two singles had runners on the corners with the lead run at the plate a ground out ended the Pride threat. Clarke scored one run on three hits and left two on.
Wilke with one out in the seventh hit a single and then advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. The Bobcats were unable to get the insurance run in the top of the seventh as they had no runs on one hit and left one on base.
The Pride with two down in the seventh hit a single and then the runner advanced to second on an error. The Pride runner was left stranded as the 'Cats won the game 3-1.
Alana Krieser (Lincoln) pitched a complete game striking out two batters giving up one run on seven hits-the one run was earned.
German, Ohlde and Wilke tied for hits as they each had two in game one. All three led the team in RBIs as they all had one.
Game 2
Ohlde in the top of the first hit a leadoff single but then would later be bounced in a fielder's choice. Peru State scored no runs on one hit and left one on base.
Two singles and a walk with one down in the bottom of the first loaded the bases for the Pride. A third single in the inning scored two runs. Clarke led 2-0 after the first. The Pride had two runs on three hits and left two on base.
Dixon in the top of the second with two outs hit a single, but the 'Cats were unable to get a two out rally going. Peru State had no runs on one hit and left one on.
The Pride had back-to-back singles to leadoff the bottom of the second inning. Peru State came out of the inning unscathed as they had no runs on two hits and left two on.
Ohlde was the only Bobcat to get on base in third as she singled. Peru State had no runs on one hit and left one on. Clarke with one down in the third hit a home run as they now led 3-0.
The Pride had runners in scoring position after reaching on an error, a single and a stolen base. Then a single had the Pride lead grow to four. The next at-bat the batter reached on a fielder's choice as the Pride now led 5-0. Clarke had three runs on three hits an error and left one on.
Peru State went 1-2-3 in the top of the fourth inning. The Pride hit a leadoff single in the top of the fourth. Then the next batter blasted one over the fence as the lead had grown to seven. The Pride were able to get another runner on base from a walk, but the runner was left stranded. Clarke scored two runs on two hits and left one on base.
Peru State went down in order in the top of the fifth inning. The Pride led off the home half of the fifth with a single, the base runner then advanced to second but tried to stretch to third and was caught stealing. Clarke had no runs on two hits and left one on base.
The 'Cats went three up three down in the top of the sixth inning. Clarke with one down drew a walk. Then with two outs a Pride single had runners on first and second. Then another single had the Pride score their eighth run of the game. Clarke defeated Peru State 8-0 in six innings.
Cheyenne Leach (Wymore) pitched 2.1 innings striking out one batter giving up five runs on seven hits-four were earned. Leach took the loss.
Layla Worthington (Holladay, Utah) pitched 3.1 innings striking out two batters giving up three runs on seven hits-the three runs were earned.
Ohlde led the team in hits in game two with two.
Peru State is back at home against Mount Mercy Sunday, April 24, for senior day. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
