(Peru, Neb.)—The Peru State baseball team took three out of four against William Penn on Friday, April 15, and Saturday April 16. In the third game head coach
Wayne Albury secured his 800
th win. (There will be a separate release celebrating the accomplishment). The Bobcats are now 18-22 overall and 16-6 in Heart conference play while the Statesmen are 20-18 and 9-14 in conference play.
Below is a breakdown of each game…
Game 1
William Penn managed to get a two out single in the top of the first, but they were unable to bring the runner around. The Statesmen had no runs on one hit and left one on.
William Reynolds (Bakersfield, Calif.) hit a one out double in the bottom of the first. Then a single from
Wesley Bradford (Bakersfield, Calif.) scored the first run of the game for the Bobcats. Peru State scored one run on two hits and left one on base.
William Penn led off the second reaching base on an error. The base runner would later be involved in a double play that ended the half inning for the Statesmen. William Penn had no runs on no hits an error and left no one on.
Devin Adams (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) drew a one out walk, then
Xavier Wright (
Calumet City, Ill.) hit a two-run blast as the 'Cats now led 3-0. Peru State scored two runs on one hit and left no one on.
The Statesmen with two down in the bottom of the third were able to get a runner on from a hit by pitch but that was all in the third. The 'Cats went three up three down.
William Penn drew a leadoff walk in the top of the fourth inning, but that runner bounced into a double play and a fly out to right ended the half inning. Adams in the home half of the fourth inning with two down singled and advanced into scoring position from an error by the third baseman. The 'Cats were unable to bring the runner home as they had no runs on one hit an error and left one on.
The Statesmen and the Bobcats went down in order in the fifth inning. William Penn went 1-2-3 in the sixth inning.
Bradford hit a leadoff single in the home half of the sixth, the base runner advanced 90-feet away from the plate after a ground out and a wild pitch. Jesus Tavares
(Santo Domingo, D.R.) reached on a fielder's choice as Bradford came in for the fourth run of the game. Tavares later would be caught stealing. Peru State scored one run on one hit and left no one on.
The Statesmen led off the seventh with a single but then the base runner would be bounced in a double play. William Penn managed a single with two down, but a fly out to center ended the game as the 'Cats won game one of the series 4-0.
Edgar Santos (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) pitched six innings striking out two batters giving up no runs on one hit. Santos took the win. Adams rounded out the pitching for Peru State.
Bradford led the way in hits in game one with two. Wright led the way in RBIs with two from his home run.
Game 2
The Statesmen hit a leadoff single in the top of the first in game two. William Penn was unable to bring the runner home. The Statesmen had no runs on one hit and left one on.
Reynolds with one out in the bottom of the first reached on an error and would advance into scoring position. Then a single from Bradford would have the Bobcats threatening with runners on the corners. Unfortunately, a double play ended the inning as the 'Cats had no runs on one hit an error and left one on.
William Penn went three up three down in the away half of the second. Tavares hit a leadoff single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Then
Angel Andrades (Humacao, P.R.) hit an RBI single for the first run of the game.
Blake Denson (Broken Bow) came into pinch run for Andrades. Adams then doubled as the Bobcats had runners in scoring position.
Garrett Pavletich (Bakersfield, Calif.) hit a sac fly to center as Denson came into score for the second run of the game. Peru State scored two runs on three hits and left one on in the second.
The Statesmen went down in order in the third inning. Bradford hit a one out single but then would be bounced in a double play as neither team did much offensively in the third.
William Penn hit a leadoff single in the fourth, with one down another single had the Statesmen threatening with runners on first and second. William Penn left the two baserunners stranded as they had no runs on two hits in the inning.
Andrades hit a one out single and Denson came into pinch run. Wright was able to draw a two out walk, but the Bobcats could not score with runners on first and second. Peru State had no runs one hit and left two on.
William Penn hit a leadoff double in the fifth, then a homerun tied the game at two. The Statesmen threatened after a single and a drawn walk. A ground out moved the runners into scoring position.
The Statesmen then had the bases loaded after an intentional walk. A single then scored three runs as there was also an error in right field. William Penn took a 5-2 lead. The Statesmen scored five runs on four hits and left one on in an explosive fifth inning.
Peru State went three up three down in the fifth inning. William Penn went down in order in the top of the sixth.
Tavares hit a one out triple, but he would be thrown out at home in a fielder's choice. The 'Cats had no runs on one hit and left one on in the bottom of the sixth .
William Penn drew a leadoff walk, then with two down the Statesmen hit a two-run shot as they extended their lead to five. William Penn scored two runs on one hit and left no one on in the seventh.
Pavletich hit a one out single but they 'Cats were unable to rally in the final inning. William Penn took the game two win by a score of 7-2.
Diego Oquendo (Merida, Venezuela) pitched 4.1 innings striking out six batters giving up five runs on six hits-all five runs were earned. Oquendo took the loss.
Juan Rodriguez (Bayamon, P.R.) pitched 2.2 innings striking out four batters giving up two runs on two hits-both runs were earned.
Andrades, Bradford and Tavares tied in hits for game two with two. Andrades and Pavletich each had an RBI in the loss.
Game 3
The Statesmen went down in order in the first inning of game three. Reynolds managed a one out single but the 'Cats were unable to bring him around after he was out on a fielder's choice. A strikeout ended the inning. Peru State had no runs on one hit and left one on.
William Penn hit a one out triple but the 'Cats defense bowed up as they got out of the inning with a strike out and a ground out. The Statesmen had no runs on one hit and left one on.
Adams drew a two out walk in the bottom of the second but the 'Cats could not get much going offensively. The Statesmen hit a one out single in the third, but a double play made for a quick half inning. Peru State went three up three down.
William Penn with two down hit a single but they were unable to bring the runner in. Tavares hit a single with two down in the fourth but the 'Cats were unable to bring him home.
The Statesmen were again able to get a runner on from a single with two outs but could not get him home. Peru State went down in order in the bottom of the fifth.
William Penn hit a leadoff single in the sixth he would get 90-feet away from the plate from a sac bunt and a sac fly but would be left stranded as they had no runs on one hit and left one on.
Johan Booyens
(Johannesburg, South Africa) hit a leadoff single, but he would later be caught stealing as the 'Cats had no runs on one hit and left no one on.
William Penn drew a one out walk but they were unable to get him home in the top of the seventh.
Peru State went three up three down in the seventh as we headed to extras. The Statesmen hit a one out single, but it was not their day at the plate as they left him stranded.
Wright drew a one out walk and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Pavletich then hit a single as Wright came around to score to secure coach Albury's 800
th win as the team embraced Pavletich the coaches embraced Albury in the 1-0 victory for the 'Cats.
Sebastian Rodriguez (
Cayey, P.R.) pitched a complete game shutout striking out five batters giving up no runs on six hits.
Booyens, Pavletich, Reynolds and Tavares all tied for hits with one each. Palvetich had the lone RBI.
Game 4
William Penn was able to get a two out double in the first inning of game four but that is all the offense could muster in the inning. Peru State went three up three down in the first.
The Statesmen went down in order in the top of the second.
Jose Solis (Los Santos, Panama) hit a leadoff single but then two fly outs and a ground out ended the home half of the second.
William Penn reached first on an error to start the third, then with two down a single had the Statesmen threatening with runners on first and second. William Penn had no runs on one hit an error and left two on.
Wright led off the third with a single, then he stole second to get in scoring position. Booyens with one down squared around for a bunt and then he reached on a fielder's choice as Wright came into score from third for the first run of the game. Peru State scored one run on one hit and left one on.
The Statesmen were able to get a runner on from a hit by pitch with two down but again were still unable to get anyone across the plate. Solis led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk, then a Tavares single had Bobcat runners on first and second. Doel Pina
(Fajardo, P.R.) came into pinch run for Solis. Andrades then singled to load the bases for Peru State. Denson came into pinch run.
Adams then hit into a double play, but a runner scored making it 2-0 'Cats. A Wright RBI single made the score 3-0. Peru State scored two runs on three hits and left one on in the fourth.
The Statesmen and the Bobcats both went down in order in the fifth inning. William Penn hit a one out single then a second single in the inning had the Statesmen threatening with runners on first and second. The runners then advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch.
A walk with two down then loaded the bases for William Penn. The Statesmen were unable to bring anyone across as they had no runs on two hits and left three on.
Tavares was able to single in the home half of the sixth but was then bounced in a double play. The Statesmen were able to draw a walk with two down in the top of the seventh inning, but the Bobcats won the game 3-0 as they took the series win.
Jose Diana (Santa Isabel, P.R.) pitched four innings striking out six batters giving up only two hits. Rodriguez pitched 1.1 innings and only gave up a hit. Rodriguez took the win. Adams pitched 1.2 innings striking out three batters giving up one hit. Adams earned the save.
Tavares and Wright tied for hits in game four with two. Adams, Booyens and Wright all tied in RBIs with one.
Peru State is back at home Tuesday, April 19, for a doubleheader nonconference tilt against Morningside. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
