(Peru, Neb.)—On Monday March 28, the Peru State Softball team split the doubleheader against Culver-Stockton. The Bobcats are now 5-10 overall and 1-5 in Heart conference play, the Wildcats are now 8-8 overall and 4-8 in conference play.
Below is a breakdown of the doubleheader:
Game 1
In the top of the first inning Culver-Stockton was able to get a runner in scoring position with two outs via a double. There would be no damage done as Peru State got out of the half inning with no runs on one hit no errors and one left on.
Payton Beckmann (Syracuse) was the only Bobcat able to get on base as she reached on an error but the 'Cats could not muster anything offensively. There were no runs no hits an error and one left on in the inning.
The Wildcats threatened in the second inning with a pair of singles in between a couple of outs as they had runners on first and second. The Bobcat defense held up as a force out at third ended the top of the second. There were no runs on two hits no errors and two left on base.
After two quick outs in the bottom of the second
Carlye Rothschild (Eros, La.) tried to get a two out rally going with a double. Unfortunately, she would be left stranded on second base as the Bobcats scored no runs on one hit no errors and left one on.
Peru State got themselves into a bases loaded jam in the top of the third. C-SC after one out hit a single and then an error had runners on the corners. Then a stolen bag would put the pressure on as the Wildcats had two runners in scoring position. A walk would then load the bases for the Wildcats.
Alana Krieser (Lincoln) came up big for Peru State as she sat the next two batters down with strikeouts looking. The Wildcats scored no runs on one hit an error and left three on base.
Peru State's offense came alive in the bottom of the third inning.
Ellie Ohlde (Fairbury) with one out doubled to start the inning for the Bobcats. Then Beckmann singled as Peru State had runners on the corners.
Morgan Wilkie (Bakersfield, Calif.) singled scoring Ohlde for the first run of the game. Then with two outs
Jerica German (Cortland) singled sending Beckmann home. The very next at-bat
Jessye Rowland (Pearcy, Ark.) tripled plating two more runs with German and Wilkie coming in to score.
Rothschild at the plate hit a single scoring Rowland to make the score 5-0 Bobcats. Peru State scored five runs on six hits and left one on base in the third inning.
Culver-Stockton recorded three singles in the fourth inning bringing their first run of the game home. The Wildcats scored one run on three hits and left two on in the fourth.
Hailey Wessel (Malcolm) led off the home half with a single then Ohlde singled as the Bobcats threatened with runners on first and second. A sac bunt by Beckmann would move the runners over into scoring position. Later in the inning Wessel scored on a wild pitch as the Bobcats now led 6-1. Peru State scored one run on two hits no errors and left one on base.
In the top of the fifth the Wildcats were not able to get much going offensively as they were only able to record a single. C-SC had no runs on one hit no errors and left one on.
There was not much going for the Bobcats offensively as Rothschild singled and then stole second but that was with two down in the inning and the Bobcats did not get anything else in the bottom of the fifth. There were no runs on one hit no errors and one left on base.
The Wildcats hit three singles with one out in the sixth inning to load the bases. Then a fielder's choice scored the second run of the game for the Wildcats, they would score again on the next at-bat as a single brought one runner home. The Wildcats scored two runs on four hits no errors and left two on base as they now trailed 6-3.
Wessel led off the bottom of the sixth with a double.
Cassie Pearson (Aurora, Colo.) came into pinch run. The next at-bat Ohlde doubled but Pearson was tagged out at home. Beckmann then singled as there were runners on the corners for Peru State. Both runners would be stranded as the Bobcats came up empty with no runs on three hits no errors and left one on base.
C-SC threatened in the top of the seventh as a walk and a hit by pitch put runners on first and second with the tying run at the plate. Then a fly out and two pop outs ended the game as Peru State got their first conference win of the year by the score of 6-3.
Krieser pitched six innings striking out five batters, giving up three runs on 12 hits and the three runs were earned. She would take the win.
Cheyenne Leach (Wymore) came in for the save as she pitched one inning giving up no runs on no hits.
Ohlde and Rothschild tied for the lead in hits as they had three each. Rowland led the way in RBIs with two in game one.
Game 2
In the top of the first inning the Wildcats managed to get a single, but a double play would end the half inning. C-SC scored no runs on one hit no errors and left no one on base.
The Bobcats went down in order in the first inning. This would become a theme in the second game.
The Wildcat offense came to play in game two as they started the second inning with a leadoff double, and she advanced to third on a wild pitch. A single on the next at-bat would score the first run of the game.
A fielder's choice and then two singles would load the bases for the Wildcats. A walk would send a second runner home as C-SC now led 2-0. Then the next at-bat a single would score two more runners. A third straight single by the Wildcats would send another runner home as they had stretched their lead to five. The Wildcats scored five runs on six hits no errors and left one on base.
In the bottom of the second German was able to get on base via a walk but three strikeouts would end the inning for the Bobcats. Peru State scored no runs on no hits no errors and left one on base.
The Wildcats started the top of the third inning with a solo home run. Then C-SC kept threat going with a double on the next at-bat. Later in the inning after the base runner advanced to third a single would send home the Wildcats seventh run of the game.
C-SC singled again as they threatened with runners on first and second. The Bobcats would get out of the inning but not before giving up two runs on four hits an error and two were left on base.
Mya Mathes (Ankeny, Iowa) led off the home half of the third with a solo shot as the Bobcats got on the board. Then three quick outs would end the inning as Peru State scored one run on one hit no errors and left no one on base as they trailed 7-1.
The Wildcats got runners on first and second quick in the fourth as they got on via a walk and an error. C-SC was not able to get anything going offensively after that as they scored no runs on no hits an error and left two on base.
Peru State went three up three down in the home half of the fourth.
The Wildcats with one out doubled in the top of the fifth as they would get a runner in scoring position. Then later in the inning a single would send the runner from second home as the Wildcats now led 8-1. C-SC scored one run on two hits no errors and left one on base.
In the bottom of the fifth Mathes was able to get on board via a walk but that would be it for the Bobcats in the fifth. Peru State scored no runs on no hits no errors and left one on base.
The Wildcats started the top of the sixth with a leadoff single Then another single would give the Wildcats two runners on first and second. A wild pitch would advance both runners into scoring position.
Later in the inning a sac fly to center field would plate one runner for the Wildcats. Then an error would score another Wildcat making the score 10-1. After a walk, a double would score two more runs as they now led 12-1. The Wildcats scored four runs on three hits an error and left one on base.
In the bottom of the sixth Ohlde hit a leadoff triple and then after two outs
Autumn Dixon (Malcolm) walked but the Bobcats did not get anything offensively in the home half of the sixth. Peru State lost the game 12-1.
Layla Worthington (Holladay, Utah) pitched 1.2 innings giving up five runs on seven hits all five were earned. Leach pitched 4.1 innings striking out three batters giving up seven runs on nine hits four of the runs were earned.
Mathes and Ohlde tied for hits with one each. Mathes had the lone RBI in game two.
Peru State is back in action at home Tuesday March 29 against Clarke. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
