Peru State Baseball vs. McPherson Series Recap

(Peru, Neb)—The Peru State baseball team played McPherson for a four-game series in McPherson, Kansas over the weekend. The Bobcats played tough for most of the series but ended up getting swept and are still looking for their first win on the year.

Provided below is a game-by-game breakdown of the four-game series.

Game 1
The top half of the first inning was quick for the Bobcats as they were only able to get one man on base from an error. The Bulldogs started the scoring in the bottom of the first as they scored on a wild pitch giving McPherson the early 1-0 lead.

In the second inning the 'Cats defense stepped up as Diego Oquendo (Merida, Venezuela) got out of a bases-loaded jam. Peru State would tie the game in the third inning during a two-out rally. William Reynolds (Bakersfield, Calif.) started off the rally with a double, then Wesley Bradford (Bakersfield, Calif.) singled as the Bobcats threatened with runners on the corners.

Jose Solis (Los Santos, Panama) doubled sending Bradford home tying the game at one apiece heading into the bottom of the third. The game was not tied for very long as the Bulldogs would get their first home run of the series in the home half of the inning taking the 2-1 lead.

The Bobcats would fight right back as the bats stayed hot in the top of the fourth. Devin Adams (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) with one out in the inning singled and Garrett Pavletich (Bakersfield, Calif.) singled as well. After that Johannes Booyens (Johannesburg, South Africa) singled sending Adams home and tying the game at two.

The Bobcats scored one run on three hits and left two men on base in the top half of the inning. The 'Cats defense held in the bottom of the inning going into the fifth.

Unfortunately, the Bobcats could not get anything going after a leadoff double in their half of the inning. The Bulldogs broke open the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, after a Bulldog reached on an error the Bobcats gave up back-to-back-to-back home runs. The Bulldogs now led 6-2. McPherson scored four runs on three hits and only left one man on base.

The Bobcat bats got cold in the sixth as they went 1-2-3 in order in the away half of the inning. Peru State did a good job defensively as they only gave up a hit in the bottom of the sixth inning.

In the final inning the 'Cats tried to start a rally as Reynolds singled, but the next at-bat Bradford reached on a fielder's choice and Reynolds was thrown out at second. The Bobcats could not muster much in the seventh and fell to the Bulldogs 6-2.

Oquendo pitched four innings, striking out six batters, giving up two runs on three hits but only two were earned. Jose Diana (Santa Isabel, P. R.) pitched two innings, striking out two batters, giving up four runs on four hits only three were earned but the three were back-to-back-to-back jacks.

Reynolds and Bradford were tied for the lead in hits as each knocked two in play. Solis and Booyens were tied for the lead in RBIs with one each.

Game 2
The second game of the series was a game to forget for the Bobcats as they gave up 17 runs on 17 hits to the Bulldogs even with the Bulldogs committing five errors. The Bobcats scored four runs on seven hits and committed zero errors in game two.

The first inning started out promising as Reynolds led off the game with a single, later in the inning Solis singled as well. Unfortunately, the Bobcats would leave the two men on base after two 'Cats struck out to end the threat.

Peru State's defense stepped up in the bottom of the first only one Bulldog batter was able to get a hit and he was the only one left on base. After a quick top half of the second inning the game started to unravel in the bottom of the second.

The Bulldogs started the inning with a double to start the home half of the inning. The very next at-bat McPherson homered to take the early 2-0 lead. The hitting continued as the Bulldogs hit another double in the gap. Then after a hit by pitch, McPherson hit a three-run jack making the score 5-0.

The nightmare inning did not stop there as the Bobcats gave up a single and then sent the Bulldog runner into scoring position after a wild pitch. McPherson capitalized with a runner in scoring position as they would hit their third double of the inning. The Bulldogs half inning finally ended but not before they scored six runs off six hits and left just one on base.

In the top of the third the Bobcats threatened as Reynolds started the inning with a leadoff single. Bradford on the next at-bat reached on a fielder's choice and then he advanced to second on an error. Solis than reached on an error as the Bobcats had runners on first and second.

Unfortunately, the Bobcats were not able to capitalize off the sloppy play from the Bulldogs and left two on base in the third. The 'Cats defense bowed up in the bottom of the third after a leadoff single got out of the inning unscathed.

Peru State's offense finally had some life in the fourth inning. After Pavletich reached on a fielder's choice, Booyens singled as the Bobcats now had runners on first and second. Reynolds then singled as the Bobcats loaded the bases. Pavletich scored on the next play as the Bulldog pitcher balked. That was the only run the Bobcats would get in the fourth as they scored a run off two hits and an error. They left two men on base.

The Bobcats defense held in the bottom of the fourth as the Bulldogs went 1-2-3 in order. Peru State got hot on offense in the top of the fifth inning. Solis started the inning with a leadoff single. Jeremy Santiago (Ponce, P.R.) came in to courtesy run and after a passed ball and wild pitch Santiago was threatening at third.

Later in the inning Santiago scored from a throwing error by McPherson, Tavares advanced to third after being walked earlier in the inning and Wright reached first on the error. The next at-bat Gustavo Rivera (Bayamon, P.R.) had a sacrifice fly scoring Tavares making the score 6-3. Pavletich on the next at-bat walked and Wright would score on a wild pitch.

The Bobcats ended the inning with three runs on one hit and two errors leaving two men on base. Peru State had cut the lead to two 6-4.

The Bulldogs had a productive bottom of the fifth after the 'Cats loaded up the bases for the Bulldogs from a hit by pitch and two walks. Then a single scored two runs for McPherson as they extended their lead back out to four. Another single for the Bulldogs scored a third run of the inning now leading 9-4.

Later, in the fifth the Bulldogs doubled plating two more runners and the two-run deficit had turned into a seven-run deficit in a hurry. McPherson scored five runs off three hits and left one man on.

The Bobcat bats went cold in the sixth inning as they went 1-2-3 in the inning and had no runs on no hits, and no one was left on base. McPherson stayed hot in the home half of the sixth. The Bulldogs started the inning with a lead off single. After a fielder's choice and a passed ball, the Bulldogs hit another single sending in another base runner to extend the lead.

The very next at-bat was a double advancing a Bulldog runner to third as they had two runners in scoring position. A sac fly and single would bring in two more runs for the Bulldogs as they now led 14-4. The Bobcats still could not get out of the inning as they gave up another double.

After a hit by pitch, the Bulldogs hit a triple scoring three more runs and clearing the bags making the score 17-4.

The Bobcats finally got out of the inning but not before the Bulldogs scored six runs on six hits and only left one on base.

In the final inning the Bobcats did get a runner into scoring position but were unable to capitalize and lost the game 17-4.

The 'Cats had five pitchers on the mound in game two. Joseph Vargas (Juana Diaz, P.R.) had two innings pitched, striking out three batters giving up six runs on seven hits and six runs were earned. He took the loss in game two. Juan Rodriquez (Bayamon, P.R.) pitched two innings striking out a batter and only giving up a hit. Fernando Falero (Carolina, P.R.) pitched one inning giving up six runs on six hits all of which were earned. Adams pitched .2 innings giving up three runs on three hits and all three were earned. Elijah Boersen (Cairo) pitched .2 innings and he gave up two runs on no hits and both runs were earned.

Reynolds led the way with hits in game two as he had three. Wright and Rivera tied for the lead in RBIs as both just recorded one on the day.

Game 3
In the first inning of game three the Bobcats were not able to get much going offensively as they only recorded one hit and the slow starts from the plate continued into Sunday. The Bulldogs in the home half started with a hit by pitch, then a single started the scoring for the Bulldogs as they led 1-0.

The Bulldogs had one run on one hit and left one on in the first. The Bobcats went down in order in the top of the second as the offense remained stagnant. In the bottom half of the second the Bulldogs threatened again.

McPherson had runners on first and second and then with a wild pitched both runners moved into scoring position. Peru State's defense stepped up though and the 'Cats would get out of the inning with no runs on no hits, an error and two left on base.
The offensive struggles continued in the third inning as they went 1-2-3 in the top of the third. The Bulldogs extended their lead in the bottom of the third.

The inning started with another Bulldog getting on base from a hit by pitch. After a walk, the next McPherson batter singled sending another Bulldog home. That is all the Bobcats would give up in the third as the Bulldogs scored one run on one hit and left two on base.

Peru State in the top of the four had a leadoff double from Reynolds then Bradford hit a two-run homerun tying the game at two in the fourth. The Bobcats would score those two runs on two hits and left no one on. In the bottom of the fourth the Bulldogs got one back after a couple of singles and they would score one run off three hits and no errors but did leave two on base.

The Bulldogs had a 3-2 lead going into the fifth inning. The Bobcats threatened again in the fifth as Wright reached on an error and got to second base. Then Adams singled sending Wright to third. The Bobcats looked to put the pressure on, but Adams was thrown out stealing second.

Then Pavletich doubled sending Wright home tying the game at three. The Bobcats scored one run off two hits and an error. The 'Cats left one on base. In the home half of the fifth the Bulldogs were able to regain the lead from a single and a walk. McPherson led 4-3 heading into the sixth scoring one run off one hit and left two on base.

Bradford started the sixth inning with a leadoff single for Peru State, Solis got on by a hit by pitch. Later in the inning a sac bunt from Angel Andrades (Humacao, P.R.) advanced both Bobcat runners. Josue Francisco (San Cristobal, D.R.) hit a sac fly scoring Bradford as the Bobcats tied the game at four. Peru State scored one run off one hit and left one on base in the sixth.

The Bobcat defense stepped up in the sixth as they only allowed one hit and he was left on base. Unfortunately, the Bobcats stagnant offense returned in the seventh as they went 1-2-3. The 'Cats defense held in the seventh as they only gave up a leadoff hit. Then Diana struck out all three batters.

Peru State was not able to get anything going offensively as they went three up three down again on offense in the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth the Bulldogs threatened quickly as they got runners on first and second from a walk and a single. Then the bases were loaded after another walk. The Bulldogs hit one into right center as a sac fly would send a runner home and the Bulldogs would take the series win winning 5-4 in eight innings.

The 'Cats used four pitchers in game three, Sebastian Rodriguez (Cayey, P.R.) pitched four innings, striking out three batters, giving up four runs off five hits and four were earned. John Laureano (Gurabo, P.R.) pitched 1.1 innings, striking out one batter and only giving up one hit. Diana pitched 1.1 innings, striking out three batters, giving up one run off a hit and the one run was earned. Juan Rodriguez (Bayamon, P.R.) rounded out the pitching for the 'Cats.

Bradford led the way in hits and RBIs with three hits and two RBIs in game three.

Game 4
Game four started opposite of the previous three in the series as the Bobcats were hot in the first inning. After Reynolds reached on an error, Bradford singled, and Solis walked to load the bases in the first inning.

Josue Francisco (San Cristobal, D.R.) stepped to the plate and hit a single scoring Reynolds and Bradford. The Bobcats scored two runs on two hits and left two on base in the first inning.

The Bobcat lead would not last long as the Bulldogs had a productive half inning. The Bulldogs threatened with runners on first and second after an error and a single. Then a double scored one Bulldog runner cutting the lead in half. The next at-bat a sac fly sent another Bulldog runner home tying the game at two. The Bulldogs scored two runs off two hits, an error and left one on base.

There was not much action on either side offensively in the second inning. In the third after a leadoff walk Solis homered to put the 'Cats back up 4-2. Those would be the only runs of the inning for Peru State.

The Bobcat defense played well in the home half of the third inning as McPherson could not get anything going in a 1-2-3 inning. The Bulldogs had no runs on no hits and left no one on base in the third.

Peru State had a pedestrian inning offensively as they were only able to get one man on base via a walk. The exact same thing happened to McPherson in the bottom of the fourth as the teams would head to the fifth with the Bobcats leading 4-2.

The fifth inning was quiet as both teams went 1-2-3 and went down in order as they headed towards the sixth inning. In the sixth Francisco started with a leadoff double immediately putting the 'Cats in scoring position.  The 'Cats did have a chance to score as they had a runner on third and Adams flied out to left field, but the runner forgot to tag. Unfortunately, the Bobcats could not get anything after that  and came up empty handed.

After two quick outs it seemed like the Bobcats were on their way to the seventh inning but after the last batter struck out swinging which would have been the third out, he reached on a wild pitch. The next at-bat the Bulldogs hit a triple sending the runner home and cutting the deficit to one.

In the seventh the 'Cats were not able to get an insurance run and left two on base in the inning. McPherson in the bottom half of the seventh had the bases loaded after an error, a single and a walk. Then a hit by pitch would advance the runner home tying the game at four in the final inning. The 'Cats and Bulldogs were headed to extra innings for the second time on the day.

In the top of the eighth the Bobcat bats got hot again as Francisco had a leadoff homer making the score 6-4. In extra innings teams get a runner to start on second. The Bobcats would get another hit in the inning but were not able to capitalize.

The home half of the inning started with a leadoff homer as well tying the game at six. Then after a walk and a sac bunt, McPherson hit a single sending the run home from second to walk off the 'Cats for the second time on Sunday winning 7-6.

Enmanuel Cabrera (Villa Gonzales, D.R.) pitched seven innings, striking out 12 batters, giving up four runs on four hits only two of which were earned. Jan Vargas (Juncos, P.R.) pitched .1 innings giving up three runs on two hits and two were earned he would take the loss on the day.

Leading the way in hitting and RBIs in game four was Francisco as he had three hits and four RBIs. Francisco had a double and a homerun.

Here's what assistant coach Gianfranco Garlobo had to say about the series

"Another tough week for the 'Cats," said Garlobo. "We are seeing improvement from the pitching staff week by week. Cutting free passes and playing clean baseball defensively is going to dictate the rest of the season for us."

The Bobcats are back on the road this Saturday as they head to St. Louis, Mo., for a double header against Harris Stowe University. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
