(Peru, Neb.) – On the second day of the GoSarpy.com Labor Day Classic, the Bobcats go 0-2. Morningside (Iowa) won 3-1 over the Bobcats to improve to 7-4 on the season while #17 Montana Tech wins 3-0 over Peru State to improve to 7-1.
The 'Cats fell to 2-6 on the season.
Morningside Game
Peru State would start off with a kill by Jamie Copenharve
(Omaha) and a service ace from
Hannia Rios (Toa Baja P.R.). The Mustangs would four straight points to lead 4-2 before the 'Cats would cut it within one off an attacking error.
Morningside would score two straight points to extend their lead 6-3. The run would stop after a service error. Bobcats would start a 3-0 run off the kill by
Katie Mendick (Bellevue) off the pass from
Cassie Davis (Colorado Springs, Colo.). The second point would come off a Hanna Burianek
(Lincoln) kill. The last point was on an attacking error on Morningside to cut the lead to 8-7 in favor of the Mustangs.
Morningside would go on a 10-1 run to take a 19-8 advantage. The Mustangs would use the big lead to eventually win set one 25-13.
Set two Peru State would get off to a fast start. After an error to start the game by both teams, the 'Cats were in front 2-1.
Kylee Fischer (Bellevue) would get a kill off the pass from Davis.
Michelle Beer (Salem) would get a service ace. The fifth point was off an attacking error on Morningside College as the Bobcats led 5-1.
The 'Cats would lead by seven after Beer would get a kill off the pass from Davis as the score would be 13-6. Morningside fought back as they would get within one point at 22-21. The final three points would come off miscues from the Mustangs as the 'Cats took the second set 25-21.
Third set of the match was tight in the beginning as was tied at one and again at four. Peru State would get three straight points. Rios would get an ace,
Alexandra Chavarria (Hollister, Calif.) would get a kill off the pass from
Cheyenne Birkle (Holden, Mo.) and Rios would earn another ace as the 'Cats would lead 7-4.
Morningside would go on a 7-0 run to take the lead 11-7. The run would come to an end on an attacking error on the Mustangs to make the score 11-8 in favor of the 'Stangs. The closest the Bobcats would get would be within two at 16-14.
Morningside would go on to win the third set of the match 25-18.
The Mustangs would get the fourth set off to a good start as they took the early 2-0 lead before an attacking error would give the serve to the 'Cats. After a couple of errors to start the game, Peru State would take the lead 5-3 off a service ace from Rios and a kill from Mendick off the pass from Rios.
Morningside would end up tying the game up at eight and would never trail after that. The biggest lead they would see would be 10 points. The Mustangs would win 25-15 in the fourth set of the game.
Chavarria would lead the Bobcats in kills with 10. Beer would add seven kills of her own.
Rios would have a team-high 13 assists while Davis added 12.
Birkle would lead the team in digs with 13.
Mattie Nichols (Auburn) would add 12 digs of her own.
Ofaloto Moungaafi (West Valley City, Utah) and Chavarria would each be credited with an assisted block.
Montana Tech Game
Montana Tech put the first point on the board in the second game of the day. The Bobcats would come right back as Fischer would get a kill off the pass from Davis to tie the game at 1-1. The next four points would go in favor of Montana Tech before an attacking error would give the serve back to the Bobcats as Montana Tech leads 6-2.
Midway through the first set Chavarria would get a kill off the pass from Rios to cut into Montana Tech's lead. Montana Tech would never trail in the first set as they won easily 25-9.
Peru State would strike first in the second set as Beer would get a kill off the pass from Davis. Montana Tech would go on a 4-1 run to take the lead 4-2 before Chavarria would end the run with a kill.
The Bobcats would remain tough mid-way through the set. They would tie the game at 10 off an attacking error on Montana Tech. Montana Tech would then end the game on a 15-4 run to win set two 25-14.
Montana Tech would strike first to take the lead, and the Bobcats would tie the game at 1 and at 2 off errors by Tech. the game would be tied again at five.
Peru State would then take control of the game as they went on a 6-0 to take a 11-5 lead. Montana Tech would fight back taking the tying the game at 15 and then taking the lead at 16-15.
Montana Tech would go on to win the third and final set of the match 25-17.
Chavarria led the team in kills with nine. Rios and Davis contributed nine and eight assists respectively.
Nichols led the team with seven digs. Birkle and Davis added six digs each.
Fischer and Beer each were credited with a block assist.

Peru State will at home on Labor Day, September 6, when Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) play starts as Culver-Stockton (Mo.) comes to town. The first set will start at 11 a.m. Next weekend the Bobcats will be hosting their Bobcat Fall Classic as seven teams will be heading to Peru State.
