(Peru, Neb.) – On Friday, September 24, Peru State hosted conference foe Benedictine College Ravens. The Ravens won in three straight sets to improve to 7-8 overall and 2-3 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart).
Peru State fell to 3-14 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
The 'Cats took the first point of the game off a service error from the Ravens. Benedictine would tie the game at 1-1 before
Alexandra Chavarria (Hollister, Calif.) would get a kill off the set from
Cassie Davis (Colorado Springs, Colo.). Peru State would get another kill from Hailey VanLeuvan
(Elgin, Ore.) off the assist from
Cheyenne Birkle (Holden, Mo.). The 'Cats would have a 4-1 lead after an attacking error from the Ravens.
Benedictine would start chipping away after the slow start and would eventually tie the game at seven and eight. Their first lead in the game would come at 12-11. Once the Ravens took the lead, they would not vanquish it as they would take set one 25-19.
Just like set one in set two the 'Cats had the early advantage. After a service ace from Davis and a kill from
Sidney Peck (Manitoba, Canada) off the set from Davis, the Bobcats saw a quick 2-0 lead. After a point by the Ravens, Peru State would come back with a kill from
Michelle Beer (Salem) off the assist from Chavarria.
The game would be tied at four, five six, seven, and eight before the Ravens would eventually have a three-point lead at 12-9. Peru State would tie the game at 13 and would take the lead back 16-13 after three straight service aces from Beer.
Benedictine would eventually come back and win a tight game in set number two of a best of five game 25-22.
In set three Benedictine would score the first point of the set. The Bobcats would come right back with a kill from
Paige Crouch (Holton, Kan.) off the assist from
Hannia Rios (Toa Baja P.R.). In the third set the game would be tied at two, four and eight.
The Ravens would have a one-point lead at 10-9 before they would go on a 12-3 run to take control of the game 22-12. Peru State would some fight left as they would score 5-2 run as Benedictine would win set three 25-17.
Beer and Davis each had three service aces. Rios and
Mattie Nichols (Auburn) each had one.
Jaddy Duarte (Brasilia, Brazil) would have a team-high six kills. Chavarria finished with five kills.
Davis led the team in assists with nine. Rios was second on the team in assists as she set up six Bobcats.
Birkle added 15 digs as she led the team. Davis added ten.
Duarte added five assisted blocks as she had the game-high in this category. Beer and Crouch each had three block assists.
