(Peru, Neb.) – On Tuesday, October 26, William Penn University came into the Al Wheeler Activity Center and left with a 3-0 victory over Peru State College. The Statesmen improved to 17-10 overall and 10-7 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
Peru State fell to 4-26 overall and 2-14 in the conference.
Peru State would get the first two points of set one off a kill by Alexandria Chavarria
(Hollister, Calif.) on the set from
Hannia Rios (Toa Baja P.R.) and an attacking error by William Penn.
The Bobcats would see their lead increase to five after three straight points for the 'Cats. The points came from a kill by
Sidney Peck (Manitoba, Canada) off the assist from by Rios, back-to-back kills by Chavarria – both set by Rios, and a service ace by
Cheyenne Birkle (Holden, Mo.) as Peru State would lead 11-6.
The largest lead the Bobcats would have in set one would be 19-12. Peru State would lead 24-18 before the Statesmen would score six straight points to tie the game at 24. William Penn would eventually win set number one 27-25.
Just like in set number one, in set two Peru State would see two straight points off a
Cassie Davis (Colorado Springs, Colo.) service ace and a miscue by the Statesmen.
After a kill by
Michelle Beer (Salem) and another miscue, Peru State would see a 5-2 advantage early in the second set. William Penn would come back and would eventually tie the game at ten.
Peru State would break the tie with an error on William Penn and a kill by
Jaddy Duarte (Brasilia, Brazil) off the assist from Davis to lead 12-10. The Statesmen would go on a 6-1 run to take the lead back from the Bobcats. Peru State would trail 16-13.
The rest of the game would be tight as the score would be tied at 17 and 19. William Penn would win the second set 25-23.
William Penn would score first in set number three, but the Bobcats would tie the game up off a kill by Chavarria on the set from Rios.
The Statesmen would score five straight points before Beer would end the run with a kill off the set from Davis as the Bobcats trail 6-2. From this point on William Penn would not trail again and the closest Peru State would get would be one point when the score was 16-15.
The Statesmen would win set number three 25-21 and would win the best of five 3-0.
Stats
Mattie Nichols (Auburn) would have two service aces which led the team. Birkle, Davis, and Rios each had one.
Chavarria would lead the Bobcats in kills with 13 while Duarte added nine kills. Beer would add eight kills.
Davis would have a game-high 20 assists while Rios would add 19 assists.
Birkle had a team-high 22 digs while Davis added 13 and
Alyssa Bock (Plattsmout) added 11.
Duarte was credited with a solo block and one block assist.
Dawson Sharman (Sidney), Chavarria, and Beer each had one block assist.

Peru State will be back at home on Friday, October 29, as Missouri Valley College comes to town. The match is schedule to start at 7 p.m.
On Saturday, October 30, Peru State will be recognizing the senior members of the volleyball team as Central Methodist visits the confines of the Al Wheeler Activity Center. The game will start at 11:30 a.m. and the seniors will be recognized at the conclusion of the game.
