Mount Mercy Sweeps Peru State

(Peru, Neb.) – On Friday, October 15, the Mustangs of Mount Mercy University would come inside the Al Wheeler Activity Center an earn a 3-0 victory in a Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) volleyball game.
 
Mount Mercy would improve to 11-11 overall and 7-6 in the conference. The 'Cats would fall to 4-22, 2-10 in conference play.
 
The Mustangs would get the first point of set one off a kill. Peru State would come right back after a setting error on Mount Mercy to get the game tied at 1-1. The game would be tied at two after a kill from Michelle Beer (Salem) off the set from Cassie Davis (Colorado Spring, Colo.).
 
The game would be tight as we would have tie games at three, four, five, six, and seven. The Mustangs would score two straight points to take a 9-7 lead. The 'Cats would fight back to tie the game at 11 off a kill by Alexandra Chavarria (Hollister, Calif.) off the assist from Hannia Rios (Toa Baja, P.R.). The rest of the game was tight, and Peru State would eventually take the lead at 16-15 after a service error.
 
Mount Mercy would take the lead back and would win sent number one 25-21.
 
The 'Cats would score the first points of the second set off a kill from Paige Crouch (Holton, Kan.) off the set from Davis. The Mustangs would get two straight points to lead 2-1 early on in set number two.
 
Three straight points by the Bobcats would see the lead change hands as the 'Cats know lead 4-2. The three straight points would off an error on Mount Mercy, a service ace for Haley VanLeuvan (Elgin, Ore.), and a kill by Dawson Sharman (Sidney) off the set from Davis.
 
Peru State would keep rolling as they would extend the lead to 11-4. Mount Mercy would fight back and go on a run of their own. The Mustangs would eventually take the lead back at 14-13.
 
The 'Cats would get the lead back after a kill by Chavarria off the set from Rios at 23-22. Mount Mercy would two straight points to lead 24-23 and would eventually win set number two 26-24.
 
Peru State would score the first two points of the third set off a kill by Chavarria off the assist from Rios and an attacking error on the Mustangs to lead 2-0.
 
Mount Mercy would go on a 15-3 run to take complete control of the third set and lead the Bobcats 15-5.
 
The Mustangs would use the big run that they had in the first part of the game to win the third set of this best-of-five match 25-17.
 
Stats
 
Rios had game-high five service aces while VanLeuvan, Davis, and Beer each would have one service ace.
 
Chavarria had team-high nine kills. Beer and Sharman each credited with five kills.
 
Rios had game-high 14 assists while Davis added 12.
 
Cheyenne Birkle (Holden, Mo.) would have 14 digs and is closing in on 1,000 digs for her career. Alyssa Bock (Plattsmouth) added 11 while Rios added ten.
 
Sharman finished with two block assists while Beer and Jaddy Duarte (Brasilia, Brazil) added one block assist.
