Raven Volleyball Tops Peru State

(Peru, Neb.) – The Peru State volleyball traveled to face Benedictine in Atchison, Kan., and were swept by the Ravens Friday night.
 
Benedictine won 25-16, 25-19, 25-18 to improve to 3-2 overall and 3-2 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart). The Bobcats fell to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in the Heart.
 
First Set Action
 
The Bobcats scored the first point of the set with a service ace by Cassandra Davis (Colorado Springs). After a kill by the Ravens, Tyra Mollhoff (Lincoln) put down a kill from Davis to give the Bobcats a 2-1 lead.
 
After Benedictine led 6-3, Peru State managed kills by Jaddy Duarte (Brasilia, Brazil), Dawson Sharman (Sidney), Hannia Rios (Toa Baja, P.R.), and second one by Duarte put the 'Cats up 7-6. An attack error on the Ravens and a solo block by Pyper Roseberry (LaVista) gave Peru State its largest lead of the night at 9-6.

The teams would battle back and forth until it was tied at 13-13 before the Ravens rattled off four points and never trailed the rest of the set.
 
Second Set Action
 
After Benedictine scored the first point of the second set, Mollhoff put down a kill to tie it at 1-1. A service ace by Mattie Nichols (Auburn) gave the Bobcats a 2-1 lead.
 
Similar to the first set, the teams went back and forth with mini-runs. Peru State tied the game at 16-16 on a kill from Jaime Copenharve (Omaha). A Raven error would break the tie and the Bobcats would go up 17-16.
 
After it was tied at 18-18, the Ravens rattled off six straight points before Rios had a setter dump to break the run and stave off set point. But, Benedictine would get a kill on the next rally to get the 25-19 win.
 
Third Set Action
 
Benedictine took a 2-0 lead in the third set and never trailed after that point. The Bobcats would keep it close and were still within two at 11-9 and later trailed only by two late at 19-17 after Arianna Waschowski (Bellevue) had a service ace. Two straight Raven points extend their lead to four before Sidney Peck (Manitoba, Canada) put down a kill for the Bobcats' final point of the match.

Team Statistics
 
Benedictine outhit the Bobcats .329 to .101 while having 43 kills. Peru State put down 30 kills, but had 21 errors.
 
The Ravens served up seven aces while the 'Cats had four. Benedictine had 35 digs with Peru State having 24. The Ravens doubled up Peru State getting four blocks to two.
 
Peru Individual Statistics
 
Duarte led the Bobcats in kills with eight while hitting a respectable .333. Mollhoff added six kills with Sharman finishing with five.
 
The assists statistics were not accurately reflected so there is nothing to report.
 
Davis, Waschowski, Duarte, and Nichols each had one service ace.
 
Cheyenne Birkle (Holden, Mo.) led the team with nine digs. Davis and Nichols were each credited with four digs.
 
Roseberry had one solo block while Duarte and Sharman each had one block assist.

Benedictine took the match two game to one.
 
Upcoming Contests
 
Peru State is back in Kansas on Saturday as they are in Baldwin City taking on Baker at 6 p.m.
 
The rest of the upcoming Peru State schedule looks totally different than it did even one week ago due to Covid-19. Tuesday night's game with Graceland at home has been moved to Oct. 15 as the Yellowjackets are in quarantine.
 
The Oct. 2 and 3 games which were to have been at Grand View (Iowa) and William Penn (Iowa) respectively have been postponed, also due to quarantining by both of the Iowa squads. No official dates have been set as of yet.
 
Another schedule change finds Peru State hosting its first home contest of the year on Sunday, yes, Sunday, Oct. 4, at 11 a.m. against Culver-Stockton (Mo.). At the present time, the Wildcats are 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the Heart.
