Bobcat VB Sweeps C-SC for First Heart Conference Win

(Peru, Neb.) – In a battle of the 'Cats, the Peru State Bobcats picked up their first Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) North Division win of the season.

The Bobcats swept the visiting Wildcats of Culver-Stockton C-SC) (Mo.) 25-22, 25-22, 25-16 Friday afternoon in the Al Wheeler Activity Center on the campus of Peru State.

Peru State improved to 2-12 on the season and 1-9 in the Heart North. Culver-Stockton fell to 2-10 on the year and 2-7 in conference action.

First Set Action
Cassie Davis
Cassie Davis started the match
with an ace and finished with
three on the day

Cassie Davis (Colorado Springs) served up an ace to start the set and then followed with a setter dump to put the Bobcats up 2-0. After that, Peru State never trailed in the set although the Wildcats would keep it close.

The Bobcats' largest lead would come at 20-13 after a Wildcat attack error. After that point, C-SC would score five straight points to force a Bobcat timeout. After the break, Davis would set up Pyper Roseberry (LaVista) for a kill to stop the run. The teams would basically trade points after that with Tyra Mollhoff (Lincoln) getting a kill from Hannia Rios (Toa Baja, P.R.) for the final set point.

Second Set Action

The second set was tighter throughout as there were ten ties and four lead changes. Peru State again got on the board first, this time with a kill from Mollhoff coming off an assist from Rios. A double hit was called on the Wildcats to put the score at 2-0 Peru State. The Wildcats would eventually tie it at 4 and then the score would be tied at 5, 6, and 9.

C-SC would then take their largest lead by scoring four straight points to make it 13-9. Peru State would get three points to pull back within one only to see the Wildcats again stretch their lead back to four at 16-12.

Peru State would go on a seven-point run which started with an attack error by the Wildcats. After C-SC stopped the run, Roseberry and Davis hooked up to put the score at 21-17. A block by Mollhoff and Ofaloto Moungaafi (West Valley City, Utah) gave the Bobcats a five-point lead. The Wildcats still clawed back by scoring three points before Davis had another setter dump.

Later, a Wildcat error gave Peru State the second set win.

Third Set Action

Again the third set was tight for the early part as there were seven ties. It was as tight as 10-8 before the Bobcats started to pull away. Peru State jumped to a 15-8 lead before the Wildcats scored four points. Once again, Davis came through with a kill to make it 16-12. Cheyenne Birkle (Holden, Mo.) served up an ace to extend Peru State's lead. The Bobcats would go on for the sweep and its first conference win.
