Peru State Softball Sweeps Haskell

(Peru, Neb.) – The Bobcat softball team jumped out to early leads in both games of a double header against Haskell Indian Nations University on Sunday. In doing so, the 'Cats cruised to a pair of wins over the Fighting Indians in Lawrence, Kan.
 
Peru State took the first game 12-2 and then came back to win 11-3 in the second game. Both games ended after the fifth inning as the mercy rule was invoked.
 
With the two wins, the Bobcats improved to 4-8 on the season. Haskell fell to 4-7. This was a non-conference double header.
 
First Game Action
 
Regan Kirby (Gretna) started the game with a single to third. Tyler Farrell (Brandon, Fla.) singled to center with Kirby moving to third. Rachel Carlos (Waianae, Hawaii) reached with a walk to load the bases. Megan Hartman (Lincoln) reached on a fielder's choice to drive in Kirby with Farrell being forced out at third. After the second out, Elizabeth Nelson (Adams) tripled to deep right to drive in Carlos and Hartman to make it 3-0 Peru State.

In the top of the second, Taylor Moya (Keenesburg, Colo.) reached on a walk and went to second when Shelbi Audsley (Prescott Valley, Ariz.) singed to short. Kirby would then reach on an error and Moya scored with Audsley advancing to third. Farrell singled to center to drive in both Audsley and Kirby. After an out, Hartman doubled to left with Farrell stopping at third. Ally Hazen (North Platte) singled to short with Farrell scoring and Hartman moving to third. Nelson reached on another error with Hartman scoring the fifth run of the inning to put the 'Cats up 8-0 at that point.
 
After an out in the top of the third, Farrell singled to center and then went to third when Carlos singled. Hartman singled up the middle to drive in Farrell for the lone run put up by the Bobcats in the inning. Peru State led 9-0 after two and one-half innings.
 
In the top of the fourth, the Bobcats would add another run. Moya singled to first to start the inning. After the first out, Moya would go to second on a ground out. Farrell would double to right to score Moya to make it 10-0 at that point.
 
After an out in the top of the fifth, Carson Ebeling (Diller) would reach on an error. Nelson singled to left to move Ebeling to second. Hannah Mitchel (Nebraska City) doubled to left-center to score Ebeling with Nelson moving to third. Moya would ground-out, but it would score Ebeling to put the 'Cats up 12-0 at that point.
 
The Fighting Indians did score a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, but it was not enough and the mercy rule was invoked.

Peru State scored their 12 runs (their most of the season) on 16 hits (the most of the season) and did not commit any errors. Haskell scored their two runs on eight hits and had three errors.
 
Farrell went a perfect four for four and drove in three RBI. Hartman, Nelson, Mitchel, and Audsley each had two hits with Nelson adding three RBI. Hartman was credited with two RBI.
 
Moya pitched a complete game for the win. She allowed eight hits, two earned runs, and struck out two.

Second Game Action
 
After an out to start the first inning, Farrell singled to right and then would go to second when Carlos followed with a single to short. Hartman reached on a walk to load the bases. Hazen reached on a fielder's choice with Farrell being thrown out at home. Nelson followed with a single to left which drove in Carlos and Hartman to make it 2-0 Peru State.
 
The Bobcats had their biggest inning in the top of the second. Mitchel started with a double to deep right-center and then Moya drove her home with a triple. Audsley singled up the middle to drive in Moya and then went to second base with a steal. On a ground out, Audsley went to third. Farrell reached on an error with Audsley scoring. After several position changes by Haskell, Farrell would advance on a passed pass. After the second out, Hartman singled to short with Farrell scoring. Hazen would double, but it was not deep enough. But, Peru State now led 6-0.

Peru State would add more runs in the top of the third. Moya singled to short and went to second when Audsley bunted and reached on a base hit. Farrell reached on a dropped fly ball with Moya and Audsley both scoring. Farrell would advance to third on a wild pitch and later would score on another Haskell error. At that point, the 'Cats led 9-0.
 
Haskell would score one in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 9-1.
 
In the top of the fifth, Kirby reached on a walk as did Farrell. Carlos singled to left to load the bases. Sadi Howes (Denver) reached on a walk to drive in Kirby. Hazen reached on an error with Farrell scoring. Peru State would leave the bases loaded, but led 11-1 through four and one-half innings.
 
The Fighting Indians would score two in the bottom of the fifth, but it was not enough as the mercy rule was again invoked with the Bobcats winning 11-3.
 
The Bobcats scored their 11 runs on 11 hits and committed one error. Haskell scored their three runs on nine hits and had five errors.
 
Carlos, Moya, and Audsley each had two hits to lead the Bobcats. Farrell led the team with three RBI while Nelson was credited with two.

Moya won her second game of the day as she tossed four innings in the second outing. She allowed six hits, one earned run, and struck out one. Ebeling tossed the final inning. She allowed three hits and two earned runs.

Upcoming Games
 
The Bobcats will play their next ten games at home and it appears at least the first three double headers will not be challenged by Mother Nature.
 
On Thursday, Peru State will be hosting Ottawa (Kan.) for a double header beginning at 2 p.m. The Braves, who were pre-season ranked 13th, have started the season with a 14-6 mark. Ottawa has dropped their last three games.
 
Mount Mercy (Iowa) will be the Bobcat opponent on Saturday for a double header beginning at 1 p.m. The Mustangs have started the season with a 9-6 mark and are 1-1 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart).
 
On Sunday, Peru State will host Clarke (Iowa) in a double header beginning at 1 p.m. The Pride, who were receiving votes in the initial coaches' poll are 2-6 on the year with several games not yet reported. They will play Culver-Stockton in Heart action before heading to Peru State.
