York Panthers Top Bobcat WBB 59-50

(Peru, Neb.) – In the first night of the York College Classic, the host Panthers handed the Peru State women their second-straight loss 59-50.
 
With the win, York improved to 2-2 while the Bobcats fell to 2-2.
 
First Quarter Action
 
Maddy McPhillips (Omaha) hit a trey to open the game on an assist by Brooke Maeda (Honolulu) with 9:41 in the quarter. York would come back and score the next eight points to go up 8-3 before Abigail Niebrugge (Omaha) hit a hoop in the pain on an assist from McPhillips. Later, McPhillips would hit a three-pointer off an assist from Destany Ross (Gretna) to tie it at 8-8 with 2:55 left in the quarter. Only one more bucket would be scored in the quarter and York led 10-8 after the first ten minutes.

Second Quarter Action
 
Jackie Beaugard (Omaha) would get a bucket to start the second quarter to tie it at 10-10. A trey by the Panthers gave them the lead, one they would not relinquish the rest of the quarter. York would lead by eight at 27-19 at the end of the first half.
 
Third Quarter Action
 
York would lead by as many as 12 at 36-24 in the third quarter with 6:13 to go. At that point, the 'Cats would get an old-fashioned three-point play from Niebrugge to pull within single digits at 36-27. Niebrugge would then make one of two free throws before Maeda made a two-pointer to make it 36-30 with 4:04 left. McPhillips would make one of two free throws as would Niebrugge and the Bobcats were now back with four at 36-32.
 
Maeda would make two free throws and Peru State now was within two at 36-34 with 2:14 left in the third period. Unfortunately for Peru State, the Panthers scored the next six points and led 42-34 at the end of the quarter.
 
Fourth Quarter Action
 
The Panthers would score the first five points of the final quarter forcing the 'Cats to fight back from a 13-point deficit.
 
The Bobcats would cut the lead down to five at 53-48 as Beaugard scored a bucket off a turnover. After York scored a two-pointer, Beaugard again to make it 55-50 with 2:23 left in the game.

Peru State went cold during the final two minutes and York scored two more buckets to win 59-50.

Team Statistics
 
Peru State had its coldest night of shooting in the early season as they only made 17 of 62 field goals for 27.4% and made just seven of 26 three-point tries for 26.9%. At the charity stripe, the Bobcats made just nine of 17 for 52.9%. The Panthers made 24 of 61 field goals for 39.3%, but were cold from behind the arc as they hit just three of 23 for 13%. At the free throw line, York made eight of 13 for 61.5%.
 
York had an edge in rebounding by 13 at 49-36. Both teams had 12 assists. The Panthers had 19 turnovers while Peru State finished with 15. The Bobcats blocked two shots while York had three. York also had one more steal than Peru State as they finished with nine.
 
Individual Statistics
 
Three Bobcats finished in double figures and were led by Maeda who had a game-high 15 points. Niebrugge and Beaugard each added ten points.

Beaugard had a double-double as she grabbed ten rebounds to lead Peru State. McPhillips added nine rebounds.
 
McPhillips had a game-high five assists while Beaugard dished out three. Maeda and Ross each had two assists.
 
Beaugard and Lauren Beath (Bakersfield, Calif.) each blocked one shot. Beaugard had a game-high three steals while Maeda nabbed two.
 
Upcoming Games
 
Peru State will face a familiar foe on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. They will take on Bethany (Kan.) who they defeated 75-73 in the first game of the season. The Swedes are presently 2-3 on the year having lost to the Bobcats' next opponent – Bellevue – 80-59 Friday night.
 
The 'Cats will face the Bruins at home at 5:30 p.m. Bellevue is currently 4-3 on the season.
