(Peru, Neb.) – The Peru State women's basketball team played the 15
th-ranked Benedictine Ravens close through the first seven minutes of the game. However, over the course of the next three minutes, Benedictine went on a 14-0 run and the Bobcats were forced to play catch-up the rest of the way.
With the win, Benedictine improved to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. Peru State fell to 0-4 and 0-1 in the Heart with the loss.
First Quarter Action The first seven minutes of the quarter were close with the Bobcats actually leading by five at 12-7 after
Rashaun Casey (Rogers, Ark.) hit a three-pointer with 3:20 to go in the quarter. The Ravens closed the gap to 12-11 before
Jackie Robles (Parlier, Calif.) completed an old-fashioned three-point play to put the 'Cats back up 15-11 with 2:06 left in the quarter. Benedictine would go on an 11 to 1 run to end the quarter and lead 22-16 after ten minutes of play.
Jackie Robles Second Quarter Action Benedictine would open the second quarter with an 8-0 run before
Sydney Wilkinson (St. Joseph, Mo.) stole the ball and took it to the hoop with 5:18 left in the first half. Late in the quarter, Wilkinson would grab an offensive rebound and put it back up to cut the deficit to 11 at 36-25 with 46 seconds left, but that would be as close as the Bobcats would get as the Ravens scored another bucket to lead 38-25 at the half.
Third Quarter Action The Ravens would extend their lead to 22 by the end of the third stanza as they outscored Peru State 22 to 13 to lead 60-38 after 30 minutes of play.
Fourth Quarter Action Robles hit a three-pointer to start the quarter on an assist from
Justice Daniel (Olathe, Kan.) to cut the deficit to 19 at the 9:46 mark. The Ravens moved out to a 24-point advantage at 68-44 before
Heather Brekke (Sunrise, Fla.) hit back-to-back treys with the first one coming on an assist from Daniel to make it 68-50. After a bucket by Benedictine, Robles hit a three from Wilkinson and then Wilkinson hit a bucket of her own to make it 70-55 with 5:03 left in the game.
Madara Laure (Riga, Latvia) made three of four free throws to get the Bobcats back within 12 at 70-58, but the Ravens finished off the game with five points for the 75-58 win.
Jackie BeaugardBENEDICTINE GAME BOOK Team Statistics Benedictine dominated the statistics on their way to the win. The Ravens made 26 of 57 field goals for 45.6% while making 8 of 19 three-point attempts for 42.1%. At the free throw line, Benedictine made 15 of 18 for 83.3%. Peru State made 20 of 65 field goals for 30.8% and almost shot as well from behind the arc at 9 of 31 for 29%. At the charity stripe, the Bobcats were 9 of 15 for 60%.
The Ravens had a big rebounding advantage at 47 to 33, but committed more turnovers than Peru State as they finished with 23 while the Bobcats had 18. Benedictine blocked six Peru State shots while the 'Cats had one block.
Individual Statistics Three Bobcats finished in double figures with Robles leading the way with 19 points. Wilkinson and Brekke each added 12.
Sydney Wilkinson Jackie Beaugard (Omaha) led the team with six rebounds with
Celine Jolicoeur (Elmont, N.Y.) adding five. Daniel dished out four assists with Laure being credited with two.
Beaugard was credited with the lone blocked shot for Peru State. Wilkinson and Beaugard each had two steals.
Upcoming Games Peru State will host Central Methodist (Mo.) on Saturday, Nov. 21, in a Heart match-up beginning at 2 p.m. The Eagles won their conference opener over Evangel (Mo.) Wednesday night 76-59 and are 3-1 on the season.
Next Tuesday, the Bobcats will travel to take on Grace University at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 24, in Omaha. The Royals, who are transitioning into the NAIA from the NCCAA are 3-5 on the season. Grace will play three games before Peru State comes to town.
