(Peru, Neb.) – The Peru State volleyball competed in the Avila University tournament on Friday and Saturday and finished with a 2-2 mark.
On Friday, the Bobcats opened with a sweep of the Spires from the University of St. Mary (Kan.) 25-15, 25-14, and 25-18. Later, Oklahoma Wesleyan University (OWU) defeated the 'Cats in five sets 19-25, 26-24, 25-22, 19-25, and 15-13.
Peru State opened play on Saturday afternoon with a convincing 25-12, 25-9, 25-8 win over Bethany College (Kan.). After topping Bethany, the Bobcats had to face the 12
th-ranked Park University (Mo.) Pirates. The 'Cats gave 10-0 Pirates a contest, but lost 25-17, 25-18, 25-19.
Currently, the Bobcats are 6-3 on the season.

hidden Alyssa Martin. University of St. Mary Rian Kirby (Gretna) was the only Bobcat with double-digit kills in the opening win as she finished with 14 kills on 30 attempts while hitting .433.
Cristal Quinonez (Anthony, N.M.) added nine kills and hit .300 while
Carrie Lierz (Holton, Kan.) finishing with five kills.
Courtney Jurek (Bellevue) put up 29 assists in the win.
Kirby was also tough at the serving line as she finished with a career-high six service aces.
Mallory Hull (Morse Bluff) added two service aces while
Shannon Liewer (Imperial), Jennifer Ostrowski (Kankakee, Ill.), and Jurek each contributing one.
Hull led the team with 20 digs with
Hope Harsh (Cassoday, Kan.) and Liewer providing 12 and ten respectively.
Ostrowski was a force at the net with four solo blocks and one block assist. Quinonez added three solo blocks and two blocks while
Alyssa Martin (Grand Island) had one solo block and three block assists. Kirby contributed two block assists with Lierz having one block assist.
ST MARY BOX SCORE Oklahoma Wesleyan University Quinonez led the 'Cats against OWU with 12 kills and hit .367.
Bre Brandt (Papillion) added ten kills with Lierz adding nine. Kirby finished the game with six kills.
Jurek had 44 assists in the five-set loss.
Harsh and Ostrowski each had two service aces with Hull and Jurek each adding one.
Hull, Liewer, and Harsh all were over the 20-mark in digs with Hull leading the way with 29. Liewer had 26 and Harsh had 20.
Again Ostrowski was tough at the net with eight solo blocks and one block assist. Martin had five solo blocks and one block assist while Quinonez finished with three solos and one block assist. Kirby contributed one solo and two block assists with
Alexandria Mitchell (Fort Worth, Texas) and Lierz each adding one block assist.
OWU BOX SCORE Bethany College It was a focused effort against Bethany in the first game on Saturday.
Lierz led the team with 12 kills on no errors on 27 attempts while hitting .444. Kirby added ten kills and hit .385. Martin and Ostrowski each contributed five kills with Martin getting hers on just seven swings to hit .714.
Jurek led the team with 31 assists.
Again Kirby was tough at the service line matching her career-high of six service aces with Harsh adding four. Jurek added three with Ostrowski finishing with two.
Hull led the team with 17 digs. Jurek finished the game with a double-double as she had 11 digs.
Ostrowski and Martin each had two solo blocks with Martin adding three block assists and Ostrowski two. Kirby and
Lindsey Nelson (Granite Bay, Calif.) each had one solo block with Kirby adding one block assist.
BETHANY BOX SCOREPark University The Pirates outhit Peru State as they finished with 41 kills and a team hitting percentage of .283 while the 'Cats had just 23 kills and hit .169.
No Bobcat was in double figures with kills as they were led by
Lea Boras (Markarska, Croatia) who finished with six. Nelson and Brandt each added five kills.
Jurek had 16 assists with
Kelsey Young (Goodfield, Ill.) added ten.
Liewer was the only Bobcat in double-figure kills as she finished with 11.
Boras and Martin each had two solo blocks. Ostrowski, Kirby, and Nelson each had one solo block with Ostrowski and Nelson each having two block assists.
PARK BOX SCORE Upcoming Games Peru State will host its first Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) game of the year when the Wildcats of Culver-Stockton College visit the AWAC on Tuesday evening. Game time with the 4-2 Wildcats is 6 p.m.
On Saturday, Sept. 13, the 'Cats will travel to Seward to participate in a triangular with Concordia University and Friends University. The Bobcats will face the 6-3 Bulldogs at 11 a.m. and then play the 7-7 Cardinals at 1 p.m.
