Bobcat Volleyball Wins Two to Improve to 4-1

(Peru, Neb.) – While it was not a clean sweep on Saturday, the Peru State volleyball team won a pair of games in the Grace University Quadrangular in Omaha.  The Bobcats, who only played two of the three teams, swept Presentation College (S.D.) 25-10, 25-19, 25-21 and topped the host Royals, 16-25, 25-5, 25-6, 25-21.
 
With the two wins, the 'Cats improved to 4-1 overall after the first two weeks.

For the second time in two weeks, Peru State swept the Saints of Presentation College.  As a team, the Bobcats hit .318 in the win, the best hitting performance of the early season.
 
Rian Kirby (Gretna) was the only Bobcat in double figures with 18 kills as she finished the game hitting .500.  Rachael West (El Dorado, Kan.) added nine kills while hitting .313.  Carrie Lierz (Holton, Kan.) and Courtney Jurek (Bellevue) each added six kills.

Jurek finished with 35 assists while running the 5-1 offense for the first time during the season. 
 
Shannon Liewer (Imperial) and Jurek each had two service aces with Mallory Hull (Morse Bluff) and Hope Harsh (Cassoday, Kan.) each adding one.
 
Hull led both teams with 19 digs while Liewer contributed 15.  Kirby finished with a double-double performance as she added ten digs to go along with her 18 kills.
 
Jennifer Ostrowski (Kankakee, Ill.) had two solo blocks and four block assists to lead the 'Cats in blocking.  Kirby and Alyssa Martin (Grand Island) each had one solo block and two block assists.  Jurek contributed one block assist.

In their second game of the day, Peru State started slowly and dropped the first set to the hosts.  After the 'Cats had an "awakening" between sets, they came back with a vengeance and easily controlled the next two sets and eventually gained the win.
 
Lierz led the team with 14 kills while hitting .294 with Kirby adding 12 kills and hitting .407.   Lea Boras (Markasha, Croatia) and Martin each added seven kills with both hitting over .400.
 
Jurek finished the game with 37 assists.
 
Kirby and Hull each had two service aces with Liewer and Jurek contributing one apiece.

Hull had a game-high 23 digs with three other Bobcats also finishing with double-digit digs.  Liewer had 19, Jurek added 16, and Kirby contributed ten to give her two double-double efforts on the day.
 
Ostrowski and Kirby each had one solo block.  In addition, Ostrowski had three block assists with Boras and Martin each adding two block assists.  Kirby had one block assist.

Upcoming Games
 
Peru State will be on the road this coming weekend when they participate in the Avila University Tournament in Kansas City, Mo. 
 
On Friday, the Bobcats will face University of St. Mary (USM) at 4 p.m. and then turn right around and Oklahoma Wesleyan University (OWU) at 6 p.m.  USM has yet to play a game, but will face Kansas Wesleyan University on Wednesday.  OWU is currently 6-2 and on a three-game winning streak.
 
Then, on Saturday, the 'Cats will take on Bethany College at 2 p.m. and follow with a game against Park University.  Bethany is 0-1 on the season while Park is currently 5-0 in 2014.
 
Peru State will host Culver-Stockton College in their first Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) action on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m.  Presently, the Wildcats are 2-2.
