Bobcats Top Bethel in KWU Invite

(Peru, Neb.)  - The Peru State College (PSC) Bobcat volleyball team salvaged one win in the La Quinta Inn/Kansas Wesleyan University Invite held on Sept. 21 and 22.
 
The Bobcats had dropped three close matches before defeating Bethel College (Kan.) 3-2 in their final game of the tournament.
 
Following the tournament, the Bobcats are 5-17 on the season.

It was a tight game in all three sets which saw each team take small leads, only to see the other team come back to either tie it up or go ahead.  The Spires ended up prevailing and swept the Bobcats 25-23, 25-23, 25-22.
 
Lindsey Nelson (Granite Bay, Calif.) and Brittany Peterson (Orem, Utah) respectively led the Bobcat hitters with 11 and ten kills each.  Peterson's hitting percentage was very good at .450.  Tara Gonzalez (Lincoln) added eight kills.

Courtney Jurek (Bellevue) and Paige Riza (Ravenna, Texas) were both in double digits in assists with 16 and 14 each.
 
Angie Bowers (Alda), Emily Maresh (Central City), and Katlyn Donovan (Greeley) each had one service ace in the game.
 
Maresh and Mallory Hull (Morse Bluff) each had 11 digs while Becky Boshart (Wood River) and Jurek each added seven.
 
Gonzalez collected the lone solo block for PSC.  In addition, Gonzalez had three block assists.  Alicia Petak (Omaha) added four block assists in the loss.

McPherson College Action
 
The game with McPherson was similar to the one with University of St. Mary as it was close throughout the first three games.  The Bobcats put it to the Bulldogs in the fourth set, but McPherson turned the tables to take the fifth and deciding set.  McPherson won the game 21-25, 25-23, 25-21, 16-25, 15-8.
 
Gonzalez and Carrie Lierz (Holton, Kan.) each had 13 kills in the five-set loss.  Nelson added nine kills while Peterson contributed eight.  Petak contributed six.
 
Jurek put up 28 assists with Riza providing 15.
 
Maresh, Jurek, and Donovan each had two service aces while Bowers and Lierz each had one.
 
Four 'Cats were in double figures with digs and were led by Maresh with 18.  Jurek added 13 while Bowers and Donovan each had 12.

Gonzalez, Peterson, and Petak each had four block assists.  Riza had three block assists while Nelson was credited with one.

Friends University Action
 
The Bobcats struggled at the start of the game with Friends and dropped the first two sets 25-12 and 25-16.  PSC came back to take set three 25-20, but dropped the fourth by the same score.
 
Peru State had a balanced hitting attack with Lierz managing ten kills.  Gonzalez added nine, Nelson had eight, Peterson had seven, and Petak contributed six.
 
Jurek and Riza respectively dished out 19 and 17 assists.
 
Maresh, Lierz, and Petak each had one service ace.
 
Maresh led the defensive effort with 24 digs while Jurek and Hull adding 12 and ten respectively.
 
Gonzalez and Peterson each had one block assist.

Bethel College Action
 
Another seesaw game finally saw the Bobcats come out on top as they defeated Bethel College 25-19, 21-25, 25-21, 24-26, 18-16.
 
Three Bobcats were in double figures with kills and were led by Nelson with 16 kills.  Lierz added 15 while Gonzalez had 12.  Peterson and Jurek each contributed seven kills.
 
Jurek also provided 29 assists while Riza had 15.
 
In addition, Jurek had three service aces with Bowers adding two.  Maresh and Lierz each one ace serve.

Five 'Cats were in double-digits in digs and were led by Maresh with 25.  Hull had 17, Bowers added 14, Donovan notched 12, while Jurek added ten.
 
Gonzalez, Peterson, and Petak each had one solo block.  Peterson, Nelson, Lierz, and Petak were credited with a block assist each.

Career Updates
 
Maresh moved up to seventh in the Bobcat all-time career service aces as she now has 163 for her career.  The weekend moved her ahead of Kaylee Michalski (1986-89) and Anna Barnoski (2001-03).
 
Next Action
 
As the Bobcats now are through with tournament action, their regular season schedule will either be two or three games each week.
 
This week, Peru State will face two Heart of America Conference (HAAC) foes, both at home.  On Tuesday, the MidAmerica Nazarene University Pioneers will visit the Al Wheeler Activity Center (AWAC) at 7 p.m.  Presently, the Pioneers are tied for second in the conference with a 2-0 record and are 12-4 overall.
 
Then, on Homecoming Saturday, the 'Cats will host the Culver-Stockton College Wildcats at 1 p.m. prior to the football game.  The Wildcats are currently 0-2 in the HAAC and are 6-10 overall.
 
The following Wednesday, Oct. 3, Peru State will travel to Omaha to face the Grace University Royals in a non-conference game beginning at 7 p.m. 
 
Two more home games will also take place the first week of October as the Bobcats will host HAAC foe, Avila University at 6 p.m. on Friday.  The Eagles are currently 9-9 on the year and 2-2 in the HAAC.
 
At 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6, prior to the football game, the Bobcats will host Manhattan Christian College in the AWAC.
