It took 30 years for it to happen again. In December, Shannon Liewer (Imperial) and Logan Paben (Columbus) were both named to the 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Volleyball and Football First Teams respectively. With this honor, the two have been named as the December Peru State Athletes of the Month by athletic director Steve Schneider.
Schneider noted, “To have any student-athlete earn this recognition is outstanding. But, to have one each in volleyball and football for any school is an accomplishment. Credit goes to both Shannon and Logan for their efforts on the court and playing field, as well as, in the classroom.”
It was 30 years ago that Michelle Workman Salberg and Pat Mertens earned the same honors for the same sports. At that time, the award was known as GTE First Team All-Americans.
Liewer was one of six volleyball players selected to the First Team while Paben was named the top CoSIDA Academic All-America® of the Year for football. Last year, Paben was also a First Team member.
Liewer is a biochemical science major while Paben is a middle grades education major.
