Following excellent performances in October, Shannon Liewer (Imperial) and Briar Burr (Wood River) were named the Peru State Bobcat Athletes of the Month for October. Athletic director Steve Schneider recently made the announcement.
Liewer had an outstanding month for the Bobcat volleyball team which went 10-4. After earning a Heart of America Athletic Conference Defender of the Week honor at the end of September, Liewer was named the Defender of the Week on Monday, Oct. 19. That week the Bobcats went 3-0 which included an upset win over Central Methodist on the road. In that match, Liewer had a career-high 39 digs which tied for the conference best mark at that point. With that effort, and her strong performances against Morningside (Iowa) and Grace, Liewer was named the NAIA’s Defender of the Week. It was the first time a Peru State volleyball player had earned a national honor since 1997.
Currently, Liewer is sixth in the NAIA with 683 total digs and is 16th in digs per set at 5.550. She also leads the Heart in digs per set with one regular season game remaining and only trails the total digs leader by four.
“Shannon and Briar are deserving of their being named as the October Bobcat Athletes of the Month. Shannon has come in and handled the libero responsibilities admirably and has also provided some tough serving for her team. Briar has stepped up this season as one of the leaders on the defense and has made some good plays for us all season long,” stated athletic director Schneider.
