Peru State athletic director Steve Schneider announced on Feb. 3 that Karlee Stuart (Las Animas, Colo.) and Corday Sims (Chicago) were selected as the Bobcat Athletes of the Month for January. Stuart and Sims become the first pair of honorees to be selected back-to-back in consecutive months since the inception of the award in October 2011. Other individuals have been selected back-to-back, but not a consecutive pair.
Â
Both were selected due to their consistent play during the month. In addition, Sims was selected as he earned his third Heart of America Athletic Conference Player of the Week honor on Jan. 26. Stuart became just one of few Bobcat women’s basketball players to score more than 1,000 points in a career.
Â
On Jan. 19, Stuart, a 5-8 senior guard/forward, scored her 1,000th point in the Bobcat victory over Grace University while playing in front of the home crowd. Stuart averaged 15.6 points per game in January in 11 contests and was in double figures in all but two games. In the first three games of the month, Stuart finished the games with double-digit scoring and rebounds.
Â
Currently, Stuart is Peru State’s leading scorer as she is averaging 14.47 points per game. In addition, she is presently the rebounding leader averaging 7.63 rebounds per game. Stuart is among the leaders in NAIA Division I women’s basketball as she is listed in two different Top 50 individual categories. Through Feb. 3, Stuart has scored 1,062 points which moves her into the Top 10 Career Scoring, replacing Liz Jessen who played from 1987-1990.
