(Peru, Neb.) – Bobcat football player Dan Boshart (Wood River) and baseball player Chaz Dunn (Falls City) were recently named by Peru State athletic director Wayne Albury as the July Bobcat Athletes of the Month. They were selected by Albury for the honor based on their recent recognitions by the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart).
Both Dunn and Boshart were top student-athlete honorees at the recent Heart Summit. Heart Commissioner recognized Dunn as the conference’s A.O. Duer Male Award winner while Boshart was named as the Heart’s Dr. LeRoy Walker Champions of Character honoree.
The Dr. LeRoy Walker Champions of Character Award is for student-athletes who are at least a junior in academic status and have a 3.0 grade point average or higher. In addition, the student-athlete must be involved on campus and in the community and they must embrace the five core values of the NAIA’s Champions of Character program.
As part of the application process, Boshart had to submit a resume of his accomplishments and an essay on how he demonstrated one of the core values of the Champions of Character. These aspects, along with several letters of recommendation had to share information on Boshart’s academics, athletics, leadership, and dedication to not just football, but to a dedication of living up to the core values.
Boshart is a senior social science teaching and coaching major and has a perfect 4.0 grade point average. He has been on the Dean’s List for six semesters, is a Board of Trustees Scholar, and was a Daktronics-Scholar-Athlete last fall.
Both Dunn and Boshart are members of the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC). Boshart will succeed Dunn as the SAAC president – a position Dunn held for three years.
In announcing his July selections, Albury noted “Earning the conference honors that Chaz and Dan did at the Heart Summit truly merits recognition as Peru State’s athletes of the month.”
