Better late than never …. And especially since the month of February was missed.
Bobcat athletic director Steve Schneider recently announced that Peru State softball player Tyler Farrell (Brandon, Fla.) and baseball player Alberto Rosario (Carolina, Puerto Rico) were selected as the March Athletes of the Month. They were picked based on their athletic efforts during the past month.
Both Farrell and Rosario earned Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) Player honors.
Farrell was named the Heart Player of the week for her efforts during the week of March 6. She became the first Bobcat softball player in nearly three years to earn player of the week honors.
During the spring break trip to Kansas and Oklahoma, Farrell hit safely in all six games while the Bobcats went 3-3 on the week. She had 14 hits in 24 at bats averaging .583. Three of her 14 hits were home runs which gave her a slugging percentage of .958. Farrell drove in 13 RBI and scored seven runs.
Perhaps her biggest hit came in the eighth inning in the second slug-fest game against Langston (Okla.) when she hit a three-run home run to put the 'Cats on top 15-12. Peru State went on to win 15-13.
Currently, Farrell has the team’s third best batting average at .369 which includes 41 hits – six doubles and seven home runs. She has 34 RBI which is the best on the team at this point.
Schneider commented, “As Tyler and Alberto each were recognized by the conference, they were easy selections. Congratulations to both of them on their picks as March athletes of the month.”
