Bobcat athletic director Steve Schneider recently announced that Peru State women’s basketball player Deandra Williams (Rosenberg, Texas) and men’s basketball player Rashad Brackeen (Oakland, Calif.) were selected as the January Athletes of the Month. They were picked based on their athletic efforts during the past month.
The Peru State men went 4-6 in January with Brackeen being the leading scorer in half of the contests. Against Missouri Valley, Brackeen finished with 31 points and followed up with 34 against Evangel which earned him the Heart Player of the Week, as well as, the NAIA DI National Player of the Week.
Like Williams, Brackeen is his team’s leading scorer averaging just under 20 points per game at 19.50 while connecting on 42.6% of his field goal tries. Also, Brackeen is the Bobcats’ assist leader averaging 3.13 dimes per game.
Currently, Brackeen is listed in four different individual NAIA DI men’s individual rankings: third in three-point field goals made per game (3.458); third in total three-point field goals made (83); sixth in total scoring (468), and tenth in total points per game (19.5). His 83 made three-point field goals has moved him into eighth in Peru State’s single-season records.
Schneider commented, “Both Deandra and Rashad have helped lead their teams to their respective wins this month. Congratulations to both of them on their selections as January athletes of the month.”
