(Peru, Neb.) – The 1990 Football Team is the 43rd of 84 individuals and/or teams being recognized as part of the lead up to the 31
st Peru State Hall of Fame Induction ceremony.
As Nebraska and Peru State are both celebrating their 150
th birthdays, the College is also hosting special events throughout the year. The next big event on campus will be the Peru State Athletic Hall of Fame banquet which will take place on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 22 and 23.
As a lead up to the upcoming Hall of Fame event, the 84 individuals and/or teams will be recognized on a daily basis with one noted on each of the 84 days prior to the event.
The inscription on 1990 Football Team plaque which is exhibited in the upper lobby of the Al Wheeler Activity Center reads as follows: "Though many Peru State College football teams have gone undefeated and many Bobcat individuals and teams have made their marks at the national level, the 1990 grid squad will forever be remembered as the first Peru team to bring home a national championship. Explosive and talented on both sides of the ball, they cruised through a regular season without a loss, then muscled their way through the four game playoffs enroute to a 12-0-1 record and the NAIA Division II national title. While numerous individual honors were awarded after that season, in was the squad's unique collection of talented and dedicated layers and a strong coaching staff that combined to bring home a coveted national title."
The team was inducted into the College's Athletic Hall of Fame at the earliest possible time according to the Hall of Fame selection criteria.
Peru State alumnus Paul Fell created this cartoon shortly after the national championship.
It was a definite sense of pride at the time and still is today!
There has been much written about the 1990 team and the College still continues to celebrate this team as its only national championship.
The 1991 annual,
The Peruvian, was dedicated to the team. In its opening it states, "We proudly dedicate this 1990-91
Peruvian to the 1990 NAIA Division II Football Champions. It was their hard work and dedication that put Peru State on the map. For that we will be forever grateful."
The following five paragraphs are excerpts from the
Omaha World-Herald on Sunday, Dec. 16, 1990, which was written by Rich Kaipust: "Peru State's season of firsts ended with the Bobcats getting their prize catch in their final game.
Omahan Ron Shaneyfelt broke a 7-7 tie with a 38-yard field goal in the fourth quarter and then Adrian Witty finished two-time defending champion Westminster College with an interception return for a touchdown as Peru State scored a 17-7 victory Saturday for the NAIA Division II football championship.
The Bobcats completed their season 12-0-1 before 3,034 at UNO's Caniglia Field.
'It's hard to put into words right now," said Bobcats Coach Tom Shea. 'There's a sense of accomplishment. It took a lot of people – the administration, the assistant coaches, a great group of athletes – to realize the dream.'"
