Jeff Smith is being recognized in the Peru State College Athletic Hall of Fame for Meritorious Service and as a student-athlete.
Smith was a two-sport athlete for the Bobcats as he played both basketball and baseball. His greatest accomplishments came on the hard court. The successful guard was quick to dish out the dimes to his teammates.
He had 151 single-season assists in 1979-80 and finished his career with 289. At the time he finished his career, both of those were top marks. Presently, his career total is still fifth while his season mark is seventh. In addition, he is still tied for first with the most assists in one contest with 15.
Smith’s induction is also heavily weighted due to his outstanding meritorious service in education and coaching since leaving Peru State. He has had successful coaching efforts which included high school stops at Pawnee City and Lincoln Southeast where he is still teaching and coaching.
Smith’s high school coaching career resulted in being the all-time winningest coach in Lincoln Southeast history with 342 wins. In addition, the Knights appeared in 13 state basketball tournaments while garnering two runner-up finishes. One of his golf teams won a state championship in 2009.
Jeff Smith has coached collegiately at Peru State, Nebraska, and Eastern Washington.
