While a Bobcat, Rhodus lettered in football, basketball, and track. After graduating from Peru State in 1962, he taught and coached in Nebraska high schools for many years. In the 1970s while serving as teh Dean of Students at Hastings College, Rhodus was asked to establish the Broncos' women's basketball program. He reluctantly accepted and the rest is history.

He coached the Hastings team for 24 years and amassed over 400 wins. His first team in 1977-78 posted an 11-9 record and finished fourth in the State AIAW tournament. The next year, the Broncos posted a 17-6 mark and won the conference title. That Broncos' team was inducted into the Hastings Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998. His teams won conference titles in 1979, 1989, 1993, 1994, and 1999. His 1992-93 team won 31 games which was a Nebraska State Collegiate record at that time. Five of his teams made it to the NAIA National Tournament.

Ken Rhodus was a significant contributor to basketball at both the conference and national levels and was highly regarded by his peers in coaching. On five different occasions, he was recognized as the District of Conference Coach of the Year. He was inducted into the NAIA Coaches Hall of Fame in 2001.
