(Peru, Neb.) – Better late than never is an old adage and is appropriate in this situation. A very busy end of March and early April made the aging SID to forget a few things. One of the things that was almost forgotten was to name the Peru State Bobcat Athletes of the Month for March.
Athletic director Wayne Albury recently announced that softball player Alana Krieser (Lincoln) and baseball player Manuel Caballero (Dolega, Panama) were selected as March’s Bobcat Athletes of the Month.
A junior pitcher, Krieser tossed a no-hitter against William Penn (Iowa) where she nearly had a perfect game as she allowed just one walk while striking out seven. It was Peru State’s first no-hitter since May 1, 2014.
In addition, Krieser also threw a shut-out against Culver-Stockton (Mo.) where she allowed just two hits and struck out five.
For her efforts, Krieser was named the Heart of America Athletic Conference (Heart) Pitcher of the Week.
A senior third baseman/pitcher had a successful month of March. Caballero hit safely in nine of 15 games as he was 17 of 38 for a .447 hitting percentage which included two doubles. He drove in 15 RBI in the month.
In addition, Caballero picked up two wins in his three starts on the mound which included a big win over a nationally-ranked team from last year. He had eight strikeouts in those three starts.
Caballero was also efficient in put-outs as he had 21 attempts and only had one error.
Both the Peru State softball and baseball teams are in contention for post-season play at this point.
Albury commented, “Alana and Manuel were consistent with their efforts during the month of March. That is the reason for their selection as the March Bobcat Student-Athletes of the Month.”
