(Peru, Neb.) – A donation of $225 will be sent to the American Cancer Society from the Peru State Athletic Department. The donation is in support of the nationwide annual event – Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers Challenge.
During the week of Jan. 22, basketball coaches and their staff across the country were encouraged to wear sneakers with their suits on game days to: 1) Raise awareness about the fight against cancer; 2) Share the importance of nutrition and physical activity in reducing one's risk of the disease; and 3) Promote the American Cancer Society as a place for people facing cancer to turn 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Both of the Bobcat basketball teams participated and the coaching staffs donned their sneakers when the teams hosted the Evangel University Crusaders on Thursday, Jan. 26. The College's administration had agreed to not charge an admission and allow for a freewill donation for the night.
At the Thursday, Feb. 16 games with Benedictine College, prior to the men's game, Bobcat coaches Troy Katen and Maurtice Ivy made a symbolic presentation of a check in the amount of $225 to Peru State President Dr. Dan Hanson.
Bobcat men's coach Troy Katen said, ““We are excited to have continued the tradition of hosting a Sneakers & Suits game this year. This event is just a small way for us to give back to cancer research in the area.”
“Everyone can look back and say they've had someone that has been affected by this disease. This is an opportunity at our level to bring some awareness to southeast Nebraska, our fans, and the HAAC Conference. While we raised a larger amount last year, we are still pleased with the amount we are donating in 2012,” added Katen in conclusion.
